We've found that new and growing field of Building Science can be applied to individual homes. Building Science, or House as a System, refers to the belief that all of your home's systems - furnace, ducts, hot water heater, insulation, roofing, siding, crawlspace - all interact and all need to be considered before doing work to any one piece. For instance, adding insulation to your attic won't be particularly effective unless the air gaps in your ceiling, around ceiling fixtures, smoke detectors, and duct registers, are first sealed with foam and caulk. There is a particular order that items need to be performed in for each aspect to work at its best. Understanding this is part of Building Science.
