  • One World Arts Exchange was established in 1994 to promote intercultural understanding through the arts. Founded in Connecticut, the business relocated to Seattle, WA in 2009. Abdoulaye Sylla is our Artistic Director. He is a former member of the world-renowned Les Ballets Africains, Guinea's national dance company, and of the award-winning folkloric company, Les Merveilles D'Afrique. Abdoulaye has been on master teaching artist and performing artist rosters of the Connecticut Commission on the Arts and Tourism, the Washington State Arts Commission, and 4Culture. Laurie Sylla is our manager. She has 30+ years of non-profit management experience, and is an avid student of African dance and drum. She is currently conducting research for a book on binational relationships. One World Arts Exchange offers African dance and drum classes, workshops, residencies, performances,CDs, and home instruction DVDs, with a concentration on the music and dance of Guinea West Africa. We provide education and entertainment to students and audiences of all ages, from pre-schoolers to senior citizens. Current community classes that are open to the public take place at Fenix Fitness, 700 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA. All classes are drop-in, so come anytime. $15 per session. Sundays 6:00-7:30 pm Doundoun Dance: Learn to play the doundoun (bass drum played with sticks) to choreographed dance moves. Never drummed or danced before? No problem. Abdoulaye breaks the rhythm and the dance into bite size pieces that anyone can learn. You'll be playing and moving in no time. Tuesdays 7:00-8:30 pm Guinean Dance: Traditional Guinean dance, usually taught to live drumming accompaniment. High energy, good exercise and great fun. Abdoulaye frequently travels to other locations to teach and perform. Updates are posted on our website. He is available to come to you, to participate in your festival or workshop. We lead personalized cultural immersion tours to Guinea, where participants stay in family homes, take classes, experience city and village life, and see how traditional heritage is still woven into modern life. Our 2013 tour included a five day traditional wedding celebration. Our next tour is scheduled from December 29, 2013-January 12, 2014, when the weather is best. We keep our groups small so we tailor each day to your personal interests. Trip registration, CD and DVD purchase may all be done through our website. Additionally, One World Arts Exchange is helping the next generation in Guinea. We operate a computer instruction school and Conakry, Guinea's capital, and also donate school supplies and pay elementary and high school fees for a number of children living in Guinea.
