Glass Beach

California history was not always about being green. In early centuries Glass Beach was used as a dumping site for garbage. The garbage has created what is known as Sea Glass, thus Glass Beach. Glass Beach is in MacKerricker State Park in Fort Bragg, California. In the early 1900s, Fort Bragg residents threw their garbage off the cliffs, where Glass Beach resided below. A lot of things to go into this beach were glass, appliances and cars.

At the time the land was owned by Union Lumber Company. By 1967, North Coast Water Quality Board understood what damage was occurring at this site, so they closed it and demanded cleanup be run. It took several years and several cleanups before the beach was restored to its sandy self. As of 2002, the state park system labeled Glass Beach as part of the state park. It is 38 acres of land, which is now frequented by tourists each year. Many of these tourists will look for glass souvenirs to take home, but the state park does not actually allow this any longer. There is a path to reach the beach which is not the best, so visitors are encouraged to wear good walking shoes.
