Yosemite Valley

The Yosemite Valley is part of the Yosemite National Park and was formed by the Merced River. The valley is about eight miles long and a mile deep and is surrounded by high granite summits. The valley is filled with scenic geological features and those who visit the area often spend their time in the valley since it is the centerpiece of the park. During tourist season, the valley is the busiest part of the park and there are numerous visitors facilities in the valley. A number of trailheads are located in the valley and many of the trails do not even leave the valley area. Trails that lead hikers out of the valley include the Mist Trail, the Four Mile Trail that leads to Glacier Point, the John Muir Trail that leads to Mount Whitney and the Yosemite Falls Trail. The valley is only one percent of the park area, but is just short distance from numerous features including several waterfalls including the Yosemite Falls, the Sentinel Falls, the Snow Creek Falls, the Ribbon Fall, the Royal Arch Cascade, the Nevada Fall and the Silver Stand Falls. The valley is also home to the Yosemite Museum Gallery.
