Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

Texas Horns Get Herman, And A New Era Quickly Begins

Posted 11-27-2016 at 07:52 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Well, that sure didn't take long, did it? Mere hours after the Texas Longhorns lost to the TCU Horned Frogs, 31-9, Charlie Strong was shown the door in Austin. He's a fine coach in his own right, but I just never believed he would be a good fit for the Horns.

Nevertheless, the powers that be at the Forty Acres wasted no time in getting the guy they really want to lead their program back to the ranks of the national elite. All they had to do was what other schools...

A Few Thoughts On Throwing Money On The Ground

Posted 11-27-2016 at 07:35 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Previously on this wonderful blog page, I shared about an experience I've had with picking up money off the ground in places I've been. Sometimes, I might find myself spotting a quarter or a dime, and I'd pick it up. I also related one time where I actually found a twenty dollar bill while walking into a restaurant for breakfast. You know, some people just have all the luck.

Now, let me flip the tables a little bit. Have you ever thrown unwanted coins on the ground...

Case Gives Thanks On This Day

Posted 11-24-2016 at 04:15 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

We really have so much to be thankful for as we face another Thanksgiving Day. It's already upon us. After work today (Yes, a few of us do have to work today), I'll be heading over to my mother's place for the annual feast.

Whatever you do, and wherever you go, enjoy the events of this day. Parades will be on the tube. So will some football games, pro and college. Travelers will be going over the river and through the woods to grandmother's house or some such...

Lettuce Continue? All I Wanted Were Slices

Posted 11-21-2016 at 08:36 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

They weren't going to be on the grocery store shelves, so it came time to make a special order. This week's grocery shopping took me to my neighborhood Market Street, and I needed slices of lettuce and tomato for sandwiches which I would take to work.

I ordered slices of lettuce from the people at the produce department. Slices. Just pick apart some lettuce from a head. That's it.

When the order came out, it wasn't what I ordered.

I...

McAllen Missed Their Chance - Why Didn't They Take It?

Posted 11-19-2016 at 10:50 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

The Rio Grande Valley's TV market, by all accounts, is smallish when you take away all the Spanish-language stations. They have a mighty fine CBS affiliate and one of ABC's strongest stations among their repertoire.

With all the population growth they've had, and what they could still have, the RGV area should really be a medium-sized market. They're worth that. Licensed to Brownsville is the market's NBC affiliate, KVEO-TV (Channel 23), and that's fine and good....
