Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

McAllen Missed Their Chance - Why Didn't They Take It?

Posted 11-19-2016 at 10:50 PM by case44

The Rio Grande Valley's TV market, by all accounts, is smallish when you take away all the Spanish-language stations. They have a mighty fine CBS affiliate and one of ABC's strongest stations among their repertoire.

With all the population growth they've had, and what they could still have, the RGV area should really be a medium-sized market. They're worth that. Licensed to Brownsville is the market's NBC affiliate, KVEO-TV (Channel 23), and that's fine and good. Years ago, I looked at a companion guide that TV Guide magazine put together, consisting of a directory of TV stations (at the time; the book is from the late-1970s) and a listing of potential future stations already commissioned by the Federal Communications Commission. Can you believe that McAllen had a shot at having Channel 11 in that market? They should have. Already with channels 4 and 5, and with NBC splitting between the two stations before 1980, McAllen would have been the city of license for a potential Channel 11 to go on the air in the Valley, and had it gone on, it would have been the market's NBC affiliate instead of Channel 23.

Well, no matter now. It didn't happen. Some doofus, years later, came out with Channel 12 to air in that area, effectively ending any bid for Channel 11. As for the current NBC affiliate, KVEO needs to give up its news alliance with El Paso TV, and just go local again. Why not? They've tried it before, but I believe that they can do it again. If they can somehow grab an anchor or two from one or more of the existing stations, and people know that person, then that would be a start. 23 needs a morning newscast on weekdays, add a 6 pm newscast, and add weekend news at night. And, most of all, put a local staff together. That's all they'll need to do in the meantime. Costs money? Yes, but it can't be that hard. And can KFXV-TV (Channel 67 but known as FOX2) please get new ownership and start over again? Their newscasts look like a high school production rather than a polished, professional look. They, too, need new life in their newsrooms, and the young reporters they have need a veteran presence to help them along. Right now, 2's news is not watchable. Valley viewers deserve better, and while 4 and 5 are viable options, that's not enough. KFXV needs a makeover. Blow it up and start over again. I suggest rebranding as FOX 67 (reflecting their original channel number) and getting enough staff (try two parts veteran and one part youngster) to have at least three to four hours of local news in the morning and an hour each at 5 pm and 9 pm.

As vast as the Rio Grande Valley has gotten, it can't be too big for four news channels. If only McAllen hadn't missed out on Channel 11, they.....

Oh, never mind that now.

And why hasn't the Valley had an independent station all these years? They really haven't. Rats! Another thing they missed out on....
