Welcome To Case's Column

Let me say a big welcome to all of you for joining me here. I'm going to call these blog meetings Case's Column. I wanted to use "Corner", but that was already taken. Since 2008, it's been a real privilege to come on here and share some of my life with you, and it's a big world where we live.

In these blogs, I'll just speak whatever is on my mind, but we will be playing within the rules here. I may pick a particular topic, point out an event, or shoot the breeze. I'm a little bit of an essayist at times, so I'll just speak what's on my mind, and I might tell a story or two. Or, I might spew out an opinion or three. There will be some serious moments, some tender, some poignant, but there will also be those moments that you'll just bust out laughing. But, hopefully, everything will be in good fun here. And, of course, there's a place below for your comments and thoughts as we go along here. So feel free to join me for the ride -- I sure as heck hope I'm doing this right and not making any mistakes.

Thanks for taking your time in reading Case's Column. Hopefully, you'll enjoy being entertained by it as much as I've enjoyed putting these writings together. And thanks for the time you spend in City-Data.com, where it's great to be alive!

Regards,

The Internet: Still A Good Place To Recapture Nostalgia

Maybe it's an old sign from a gas station where your dad used to stop and get you that icy bottle of pop. Maybe it's a picture of an old postcard showing you a snapshot of a bridge or a highway that was once traveled. Maybe it's even memories of TV themes from yesteryear that you always looked forward to seeing and listening to every single week.

Thirty years ago, we probably never would have guessed that something as deep and vast as the Internet would ever come about in...

My Goodness, What Brought All THIS On?

This writer mightily struggled to find a good title for this post. It's just that, after all the bad news we all hear day after day after day, there just might be a light up ahead. With that in mind, Ol' Case decided to let his fingers do the walking.

In a post from our main forum pages, I came across a thread with some references to The Washington Times. There were some articles contained within that were quite intriguing. And if things are intriguing, then...

Super Bowl Pretender? Just Ask The Texans

Posted 10-07-2013 at 02:54 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

One year ago, it looked like the Houston Texans have finally arrived as a legitimate NFL contender for the Super Bowl. They began by winning their first eight regular-season games en route to an 11-1 start. Sounds like all the ingredients you need to go along with talent like Houston has been able to compile in recent years. Last year, it was 12-4 and a playoff appearance.

Fast forward to today. The Texans have gone 4-7 since their historic 11-1 start, with no entry...

From The 'I Had No Idea That This Was There' Department....

Posted 10-05-2013 at 06:10 AM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

As I've shared in this space many times, you know that I'm a barbecue nut. An aficionado, if you please. Well, I've happened to have heard about a place that's become kind of an institution in my hometown (Dallas). Thing is, I didn't know it opened in its current location for the two years since.

Relax, writer, it's still there. Then again, I've also seen this in an article in Texas Monthly and thought nothing of it. You see, there's a group...

And All It Was Was A Simple Instruction....

Posted 09-29-2013 at 07:51 PM by case44 (Welcome To Case's Column)

Each day at work, even in the most uneventful of shifts, you always have at least one story to tell. One day this past week, we had one real bonehead incident involving one of our independent contractors. And you'd think, as a adult, he'd know better.

I work for a large courier company. A few work days ago, I had been on a lunch break and my backup dispatcher called one of our drivers in my assigned work area and had instructed him to get a prepared shipment...
