Now that your unpacked and got to test drive the area for a bit, encountered some locals and yokels, and hopefully some actual people that moved to the area from your home town or state its time to list the likes you have of your new or semi-new, or heck if the area is your native home than by all means and ways list what you like! Y'all got it? Well here goes!

Weather! You like or not!
Year round flowers!
Long springs!
Longer Autumns!
Shorts year round! For the hearty ones that is.
Variety of sub divisions to chose from!
Snow is a neat event versus a ho-hum not again event!
No rust on older cars! Amazing if your from the Northeast!
Can fish year round without cutting holes in the water (ice) for us North Easterners!
Pretty country side is usually only 5 minutes or less from where you live anywhere in the triangle.
People R People. No matter what they say!
Day trip to Mountains!
Day trip to Ocean!
And in a lot cases no trip at all to the many lakes, ponds, river, and streams that spot the area!
Good food can be had by all and more is always welcome irregardless if they are called viddles or pickins!
Out away from the city lights the sky at night explodes with the many stars that fill the emptiness of space with the occasional flying star to catch a dream or two on!
Groceries can be cheaper but we all have to eat!

Sure it takes time to get use to this place, remember the place you came from was called home and that is never a easy place to replace! But give it time, explore the area and get involved and this place too will be your new home not only in name but in feeling!

May the triangle, RDU, RTP, Crossroads, the Quay, Wake Forest, Knightdale, Apex, Raleigh, Durham, Zebulon, Oxford, Mossisville, Franklinton, Youngsville, Chapel Hill, Henderson, ...seems like I am forgetting somewhere....????......Oh yea! and Cary, be with you!

Oh Tarheels! I forgot to number the above as I did say I would count thy ways!

Wake Forest, NC. located in Wake County NC. Some call it Wake's Forest of the Triangle....Ok maybe that's just me. But if you come from the North East, Wake Forest seems to fit. It has some rolling hills and many farming areas.

It has a small town feel but close to Raleigh, you could be down town Raleigh, depending on time of day in about 15 to 30 minutes. You can be at the Virginia border in less than an hour.

It has old Historical homes and some new subdivisions. It certainly worth a look see if your looking and seeing the area. It has transplants from New Jersey, New York, and many other NE State and Mid West and California and....well you get the idea people from all over this great country now calls Wake Forest home!

C'mon down, over, left, or right and check it out you may just like what you see.

Thursday October 15th 2009. The day I seen the seasons first snow flake. In my favorite Charlie Brown word...UGHHHHHHHHHHH! Temp is topping off at 38 degrees today...possibly 1 to 2 inches of snow tonight. Double UGHHHHHHHHH!

Oh where oh where has my Wake Forest NC gone?
Oh where oh where has it gone? lalalalala
I should be looking up and watching the squirrels dropping the acorns off my oak trees back in WF not looking up and having a snow flake hit my face!
Oh the things we do to eat!

But ever the optimist inside me says I'm one day closer to spring and one day closer to coming back to WF NC!

So if you have a warm thought or story just post on this BLOG! The heat glows inside us all!

Woke up to snow on the ground this morning. Just a dusting and not on the roadways. Was at Home Depot last night and saw all the snow shovels lined up and skids of rock salt and other snow/ice melting mixtures along with many models of snow blowers, throwers, and sweepers. Have not bought any of that stuff in 5 years! ..didn't buy any last night either but I will, ..oh I will before this winter is over. Heck its not even officially winter yet!

My Yogi-ism on this fine Friday is:

"Nobody goes there anymore; its to crowded!"

Enjoy your weekend and make it count. Add up all the Thank-You you gave out and if its greater than 20 pat yourself on the back for a job well done.....but ifs its less than 10 than c'mon folks your heels are stuck in the tar!!!

Wednesday is here.....along with it came some rain. liquid sunshine, watered down heat, traded in the blue for gray! Makes no matter what we call it, its all good! When the eyes open and the body gets out of bed and heads for the coffee/tea pot its all good!

But I must say I am troubled this Wednesday morning with news from across the globe. Where our brave young and middle aged soldiers are doing their jobs. Both men and women making us all so very proud! I pray daily for their safety and that they 'ALL' can come home sooner rather than later...

But here is what troubles me...........
We as a nation gave them $518.3B in 2009 alone to do battle with our adversaries. We are told they are the best trained, best outfitted, best arms, tanks, artillery, planes, jets, ships, missiles, satellites, vehicles, computers, guns that shoot around corners and through steel and concrete, the mother of all bombs, etc, etc, etc.

Yet since 2001 fighting a people that have no tanks, artillery, planes, jets, ships, missiles, satellites, vehicles, computers, guns that shoot around corners and through steel and concrete, no mother of all bombs, no instant messaging, iPhones, no MRE's, no field hospitals, no war rooms, no simulated battle fields, no nothing but determination has kept our army at bay.

Every day I read of a young and middle aged proud American that lost their life in a part of the world that time forgot, on a hillside or in the dessert sand. Yet our leaders tell me they are the best prepared, best outfitted, and best of the best yet they die in many instances without ever taking a shot or being able to defend themselves. They die from an IED, Roadside bomb, or sniper...and sometimes from their own weapons.

So I shall continue to pray for these brave soldiers of ours and ask our leaders how can this be true? How can we have the best yet fight to a draw? How can we spend over half a trillion dollars a year and fight to a draw? How does this happen?

So that is what is troubling me this fine Wednesday morning...........

Its Friday! A week closer to returning to the triangle! And at this point I would even ride a Rhom-bus back!!!!

Cloudy, rainy, and cool on tap for this Friday! But no snow in the forecast and that my Blog reading friends is a good thing!

Now to figure out what to pack into the weekend.....fall leaves are about dropped, some raking is in order to round up the bright yellow Maple leaves adorning our yard. Rivers to high to do any fishing in due to all the rain we had the last couple of days.

Last weekend seen Couple Retreat. Spotty funny is how I would characterize it. I thought Vince Vaughn was funnier in his previous movies.

Oh Big Ben.....we send the clocks back packing an hour Saturday night....extra hour to sleep....That just ticks-my-clock! ...or in the case of the digital clocks we push ahead 23 hours to get the right time. The age of technology! There is also games 3 and 4 of the World Series. IMHO they are just not the same now that they are all at night. What happened to the Fall Classic being held in the day time when the sun was high and the air was warmer. I can remember ruining home from school to catch some of the games and our teachers having radios in their room listening to the games. Now that was the Fall Classic to me.

So WOW there is a lot going on this weekend. Now to fit it all in before Monday comes a knocking an hour late!

    Happy weekend all!

Monday,November 2...the weekend has rolled out like a witches brew pot! Trick or treaters which is almost all treaters now. I can remember as a kid having to perform real tricks, or songs, or something before we got out treats. Today its show up with or without a costume and get a treat! Progress my friends progress!

But the extra hour given back to us for sleeping, eating, exercising, bungy jumping, or whatever we elected to do with that extra hour was alright by me!

So its the start of November, the month of the Turkies....the fowl type as I know its election month as well and can be misconducted by some on exactly which ones are the true turkey's! Just remember the early months turkeys are the ones that have the most to say about the least and the later month turkey's are the ones that fly the least but fill us up the most!

So enjoy your week and all of Turkey month for that matter and may the best gobbler win! October was for Ghost and Goblins and November is for Gobblers!

Wednesday,November 4th. The day after the big election here in upstate NY where one of the Villages voted on whether to Dissolve into the Town they reside in or keep their Village status and all that comes with it.

Well by 1 single vote the Village lives. (they still have to count the 200+ absentee ballots which could change the results)

It was an interesting debate to watch play out in the couple of months we were here. It has been going on for several years now culminating in a vote by the people and for the people! (Had to get that in...)

What does it mean to save the Village? Obviously it saves a Mayors job and the infrastructure to support the Mayor and his town. It means higher taxes for the people left in the Village. I'm afraid it means more people looking to move out of the Village to support the high taxes which means even higher taxes for those left.

I think this vote was a referendum on the area in general. No one wants higher taxes but no one wants anything changed either. People are leaving NY State daily which means less money to spread around. This means more Government subsidy money to keep these local governments in tact. When the well runs out what than? I did not think I would see what than in my life time but living here now for a couple of months I truly think 'the what than', is getting very near.

But today the sun is out and there is a chill in the air what a great metaphor for the political climate here in NY State.

Friday....yadirF! Either way you spell or read it its a good thing! Here in upstate NY its cloudy cool with an occasional snow flurry or two! Just right I suppose!

Warmer weather is on the way for the back end of the weekend so we at least have that going for us! However, for the front end its about the same for Saturday as it is today!

Cloudy skies has become the norm. Sun has became its distant cousin on its sky side, Abby-normal! But its still all good!

But it shall be a great weekend to give,
weekends are far to short to be shellfish.

So get out and help a friend, a relative, a perfect stranger so you can add to your personal reward bank!
The dividends or yields that bank pays last through eternity!

Enjoy your weekend and <SMILE> till your front teeth dry out!

Monday November 9.......did you see your weekend slip away? Dog-on-it-nabbit! It slipped away faster than the interest dollars on our national debt. It slipped away faster than my Lab eating her food! It even slipped away faster than a jack rabbit named Bugs in a Elmer Fudd cartoon!....or do I have that backward?? lol

But it was a beautiful weekend here in upstate NY. The mornings were brisk and chilly which gave way to the relentless rise of the days warming sunshine!

Went for a ride yesterday to see more of the Empire State. Drove around and near some of the Finger Lakes and how beautiful they are. Drove through a small quaint town called, Skaneateles, New York right on the north shore of Skaneateles Lake.

The main road through Skaneateles is lined with large old majestic Victorian homes from an era gone by, all nicely preserved and many acting as Bed & Breakfast Hotels. The street was teeming with people out walking and hitting all the little shops and Boutique enjoying the picture perfect November day. If ever in the Central NY area just south west of Syracuse NY than Skaneateles is a place to check out. One can also stroll along the shoes of the lake and watch the fisherman try their luck. There is also a long pier to walk out on and get a glimpse of the lake and than walking back toward the town of Skaneateles. What a delight it was!

It turned out to be one of those special places you visit where time seemingly stands still for awhile or at least long enough for one to take in the beauty of small town America. ...and folks its still alive and well in Skaneateles, New York.

...Take time to take in life, it surely beats any prescription you will ever digest!

Tuesday! The day to count down.......Yes it is count down day.

11/10/09. This day comes but once a year. For the Europeans that day was October 11. As they use the Day/Month/Year format.

So the top things to do on count down day.....
    1. Pay down a credit card debt.
    2. Pay down a car loan.
    3. Pay down some mortgage Debt.
    4. By pass the elevator today and walk down the stairs.
    5. Take 5 minutes out of your day for a trip down memory lane, albeit your childhood, your kids childhood, or just a time in your life that was an A-HA moment in time!

Whatever you do on this count down day please make sure it really counts!

    3- 2- 1.............Out!

    November 11, 2009. Veteran's Day!

More than a moment of silence is due all of them.

They have given us the ability to do what we all do
and so take for granted each and every day.

They have given their limbs, sight, sound, and the most
precious gift of all and that is life itself.

They do it for as many reasons as we all take our many freedoms for granted.

They are Hero's and Heroines. Each individually in themselves are special and unique but collectively they are the life blood of our freedom and democracy.

They go into harms way so we don't.
They scream and holler so we don't.
They pray and give thanks so we can.
They never leave a fellow soldier behind so we can't either.

Tell a Veteran today a simple word, Thanks.

..and simple prayer for the fallen. May your eternal rest be peaceful and you will never be forgotten.

Thursday November 12, 2009 are you kidding me? Who's cranking up the speed on time? Before we know it 2010 will be here. Who is ready for that?

    2010..........That is Buck Rogers stuff!
2010..........That is where we were all going to be buzzing around in our own personal jet packs!
2010..........That is where robots were going to clean, cook, take out the trash, wash the car, vacuum, perk a hot cup of coffee for us all!
2010..........That is where fact and fiction were going to merge on the silver screen. Dead actors were suppose to lead in new movies through the magic of reanimation. OK so that one maybe 2015 but it is coming.

2010.........Ah well in reality its just one year past 2009.

...and we all know what 2009 was.....fiscal meltdowns, bailout-manias, Cash 4 SUV-Trucks, Foreclosure away, credit card fees, bank failures, the year of unemployment, local/state/federal governments having 2 nickels to rub together and spending them like they were worth billions of dollars.........yep certainly looking forward to 2010 and all the hope and promise it has to offer!

Reminds me a famous quote from Thomas Jefferson:

"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned - this is the sum of good government."

Friday....it has arrived! The front end of the weekend. The day that Makes Monday to Thursday worth it! The front end of the weekend and the rear end of the work week! How fitting is that?

Seasonable temps this weekend for upstate NY. Mid 50's and some rain tomorrow. All in all (not sure where that saying came from) a pretty standard weekend on tap.

Last weekend found the quaint little town of Skaneateles and this weekend may find another. Not sure what is the plan.

Being the week days tend to be so planned and redundant its always nice to just spend a weekend unplanned, no agenda, no must do's, must see's....just relax and on the spur of the moment do something, anything. This sometimes leads to the best days of all!

Spontaneous Saturday...that's what it will be! Areas to explore...well from the peaks of the Adirondacks to the 'Big Flat's' area of Elmira/Corning are all possibilities. The roads between the two are the only limits....(and of coarse the speed signs on those roads) Don't want a NYS speeding ticket with NC plates! That would be like 'The Empire Strikes Back" NY State wise that is! Forget the galaxy far far away stuff...would just have to look in the rear view mirror!

So enjoy your weekend make it spontaneous and rewarding. Remember, take time to laugh, as it is the music to the soul!

Monday November 16, 2009. ...and it was a wonderful weekend in upstate NY both from a weather standpoint and an explorer standpoint. Did manage to get out and see another old upstate town. The town visited was Owego and maybe more affectionately stated, 'As We Go' so goes 'Owego'.

The little town sits on the banks of the Susquehanna River. The river travels east and west along Owego. Owego became a town on March 4, 1800. Its former residents were Indians from the Onondaga and Cayuga tribes. In fact it was named by the Indians, they called it 'Ahwaga' meaning 'where valley widens'.

So most of its architecture is of the 1800's and early 1900's. In fact they are working very hard to restore and preserve the old store front on the main street of the town. There is also large historic Victorian homes as one will find in many of these old NY State towns.

They are also putting in a very nice River Walk along the banks of the Susquehanna River. Where one could stroll and think of the days gone past where Indians would paddle their canoe's up and down the river and bring in their fresh catches and their bountiful hunting catches.

Then one can stroll further along the main street and picture the horse drawn buggies bringing the town folks in to shop and trade their goods at one of the turn of century stores. Or them watching a parade march down the main street. The town is a real gem and not unlike the countless other small towns sprinkled across America. Where a hand shake is worth more than a 30 page legal document. Where trust is a birth right and not something earned and can only be lost.

So yes 'As we Go' and seen, the town our native Americans so appropriately named 'Awaga', or their Colonial caretakers renamed to 'Owego'. Well worth the trip and time spent in yet another small town in up State New York!

    A quote from James Madison.

"A pure democracy is a society consisting of a small number of citizens, who assemble and administer the government in person. "

Gee no reference to Blogs, web pages, or Twets......how far we have come???

Tuesday November 17th. Sunny but cool today and that was in the sun! In the shade it was cold. But I will take the sun everyday and twice on the weekends!

The planning has begun on what little upstate NY town to see this weekend. Will depend on the weather as not sure how many nice weekend will be left before the snow begins to fall.

Was going to go fishing a few more times this year but on October 1st the new rates went into effect for its fishing and hunting licenses. Last year it would of cost me $35 for a year of out of state fishing license and now due to the NY State fiscal budget crisis it will cost me $70 for that exact same license. That fiscal thinking is exactly what chased me and the family out of NY State.
So until I get the (H1N1 - Hunting one Fishing one) flu I will skip fishing and remain hunting-less.....

Gas in these parts is stuck at $2.89 a gallon for regular unleaded. Sometimes I think I get irregular gas....but I can't be sure.

For some reason Banana's are cheaper in NY than NC. I use to pay like $0.64 / lb in NC. In NY I pay $0.33 / lb. Must grow banana's closer to NY than NC......seems like a lot of monkey business to me!

    Thomas Jefferson Quote:

"But friendship is precious, not only in the shade, but in the sunshine of life, and thanks to a benevolent arrangement the greater part of life is sunshine. "

...what more can be said except: Happy Tuesday!

This quote from Ben Franklin is pretty darn good:

"All human situations have their inconveniences. We feel those of the present but neither see nor feel those of the future; and hence we often make troublesome changes without amendment, and frequently for the worse. "

Friday.....let me write that again Friday. has a good ring to it or is it tone? I'm not musical but I do know a good day when I hear it.

Got a pretty good rain here last night and looks cloudy this AM but still seasonabley 'nice' when I took the dog out this AM.

Got to experience a bit from the triangle last night as one of the many ESPN channels had the Tar heels on playing the Buckeyes. So I guess one can say that game was covered by ESPN from head to toe... Little humor on this Friday morning.

Man its good to be Friday and its great to be Saturday and well its Blessed to be Sunday!

Planned on visiting another small little upstate NY town this weekend but duty calls and it looks like I will be working over the weekend but that's OK too! Being a lot of these towns have been here since at least 1800 and some in the 1750's I don't think they are going anywhere if I don't get to one of them this weekend.

Funny comment I heard about these upstate towns is that in the beginning they grew and built up and now the only thing being built up in them is their taxes! Sad but true....

    Quote of the day:

"[Ours is] a government founded in the will of its citizens, and directed to no object but their happiness." --Thomas Jefferson: Reply to North Carolina General Assembly, 1808. ME 16:300

WOW! Ponder that one for awhile....Happy Friday!

Monday November 23, 2009. I was working the morning beat out of my NY home office, just came in from letting the dog out to season the grass, the air was comfortable for this time of the year, and the clouds where plentiful....wait a minute this is starting to sound like a TV show from the 60's! Dag-on-Drag-net.ittedit....

Anywho. back to the weekend. I was not gong to visit any towns this weekend but I was able to finish up my work earlier than anticipated and headed out to see what we could see. But writing about it today I guess it is better put that I 'saw what I could see'. Time stamping aside....headed south into Pennsylvania for that small town look-see. The land the Quakers settled, the land that has 1/2 of the Mason-Dixon line. Needless to say had not traveled anywhere close to that dividing line as it is to far for a day trip.

But did get down into anthracite country. Black Gold, stones that burn, Jed Clampett's liquid gold turned hard! Or as ELO use to sing, "Turned to stone".

The area we drove around was Clark Summit (shopping) and Scranton. The town where the sitcom 'Office' is suppose to be at. In Clark Summit one only has to drive east on Rt 6 to see the affects of the strip mining that took place up into the 1970's. Mountains are gouged out and large valleys were created when they moved those mountains to gather that black gold. They built a lot of stores on most of those sites which covers up the devastation that took place. One can only imagine the beehive of activity there was when the mines were in full swing. Trucks and men literally moving mountains to harvest both stone and coal. Blast after blast must of shook that area to its core. One can see stone bigger than 3000 Sq Ft homes settling on the hills that were blasted from the mountains.

Than a little further south it was on to Scranton Pa. The home of the National Steam Town Museum and Steam Town Mall. They are right next to each other. If one likes trains of yester year than this place is your coal to a miner, is your coal to your steam engine boiler, it your...well you get the combustion of what I am saying! They have trains from all over the country back when trains were Kings and cars were something rich people owned. What a neat place to visit and allow your mind to go back into time...

They have cool audio-video displays, they even have a train ride one can take. We did not do that do to time. Just a real cool place to visit. The Steam-town Mall well that's a mall. Been to a mall before than this is about the same as the one you went to.

Scranton also has a underground coal mine museum one can tour. This is where the deep mining was done back in the 1920s to 1950s. One says the area in NE PA is like swiss cheese underneath it. Did not go down into the mine again due to time but will go back again for a first hand view of life under ground. Having grown up in NE PA and having had a Grandfather that I never knew that was a miner I heard a many a stories of life of the miner. To work before sunrise, deep into the earth, out after sun set, six days a week. Rarely saw sun. The mine air was full of choking black coal dust and your best friend was a bird or rat. The bird saved your life from methane gas and the rat from cave-ins. The rats knew when to book and when they booked your did not stay around to read the Bibliography! My grandfather never retired from the mines, he got the coal miners plague so appropriately named, 'Black Lung' and died before I was born.

I can remember as a kid going to the hills and picking coal that was thrown away by the strip mining companies. In that part of the country almost everyone had coal stoves and coal furnaces. In fact it was not until the early 1970s that my Grandmother got a gas stove and centralized gas furnace. Her home was a typical 4 room two story home so close to its neighbors that one could flip the burgers on your neighbors grill if you see them burning from your back window. Her home had a coal fired heat-a-lator in the living room and in the second floor above it had a big grate opening in it to let the heat rise into the second floor from the first. The coal stove heated the kitchen area. A many a HOT summer meals where had in that kitchen but she always had the softest butter, best baked breads, and a cup of tea brewing on the stove. Now there is an era long gone! "Got Microwave?"

Well reverse out of memory lane and hit Rt 81 north back to upstate NY! So no upstate town this weekend but very thankful to head south and not for the warmer weather but to kindle my youthful memories to warm my heart of a simpler way of life.

    Thomas Jefferson Quote:

"Determine never to be idle. No person will have occasion to complain of the want of time who never loses any. It is wonderful how much may be done if we are always doing. "

Pretty smart guy he was! Make today count for two...Happy Monday!

Tuesday November 24, 2009. Cool drizzle has begun here. Temp is 50 degrees and overcast. Week is winding down to begin the long Holiday weekend. Not a good week to be a turkey.....but a great week to think about family and friends, old and new, lost but never forgotten. Memories are as fresh as that Thanksgiving Pumpkin pie or as distant as your loved ones may be from you this Thanksgiving.

Time to dust off those memories, freshin up those thoughts of Thanksgivings gone past and revitalize those old friendships and family members. No time like the present to change the coarse of the future!

Wishing all a Happy Healthy and Lasting Thanksgiving Holiday! May your meals be plentiful and your friendships flowing over!
