The ignorance about the continent of Africa is astounding, especially given that we live in the information age. It is almost shocking that so many people are so unaware. Just absolutely clueless. Africa is a vast continent with 50 countries. Some people live exceptionally well, while others just try to survive, and then there are those that are just regular people that go to work, go to school, graduate from college, get a job, get married, buy a house, start a business, raise their kids, shop for groceries, buy clothes just like regular people living anywhere else. The ignorance about Africa was expected when the access to information was limited. We now live in an era where knowledge is literally at our fingertips. There is no excuse for such ignorance in 2012.

Yeah, you mean like in South Africa, which is the one the the wealthiest countries in Africa?

Sure, some do live well in Africa. Maybe 0.1% of the population... Like Mugabe and his clan.

Every 60 seconds, a woman is raped in the United States. The U.S. is one of the wealthiest countries in the world. Over 80,00 women are raped in the UK in any given year. The UK is one of the wealthiest as well. The raping of girls and women is a crime against humanity everywhere. It is not a "South African" problem. It is a "World" problem.

Did you read the article? No.Then you would have read "more likely to be raped than learn to read".

And just because the U.S. is wealthy dosen't mean there's no crime. But substantially less crime, poverty and everything else Africa is plagued with.

it'll still take 100+ years for chinese "colonialism" to rival those of the europeans. europe basically carved up africa - both the land and it's people.

I never said the continent is without its dangers. Make no mistake, Africa can be VERY dangerous! However, implying that one should expect to live "in a hut" during their stay in an African country is just ignorant. No getting around that.

And that statistic is sad and disgusting, and highlights that the continent still has a long way to go.

I agree, but letting the euro-hate cloud one's view of China and Chinese influence is still unwise.
