Thanks...that was one of my first reads.

Now, hoping for some local thoughts before we take the trip in a few weeks.

I lived in Auburn, AL a few years back, and passed through Roanoke many times while driving north on hiway 431. Just north of Roanoke is Wedowee, and there's a reservoir just west of Wedowee called Lake Harris. It's a clean lake, fairly large, that is decent for boating or fishing (maybe not this year because of the drought in AL). Wedowee has a community college where you can sign up for classes if you like. Just to the northeast of Wedowee is Talledaga Nat'l Forest, with some decent hills and back roads countryside to explore around if you like that sort of thing. You can get to several larger towns like Anniston or Auburn, or LaGrange (GA) in under an hour. Weather most of the year is pretty mild, even in summer when I lived there I did not run the AC at night very often. Winter is surprisingly mild many years, a mix of warm and cold spells but nothing that a jacket can't handle if you like to be out and about.
One note, if you like to stop by the local corner tavern for a beer or some other drink of alcohol, Roanoke is not the place, it's in a "dry" county.
