I know not if it is accurate about Georgia, I know not if his observation would hold true about Alabama.

He also alluded to "racism" being a two way street.
I went and checked out his post, and yep, that's pretty much the way it is here.

I live in Alabama with a multiracial family and it's definitely still prevalent in the rural areas. The Birmingham area seems a lot more diverse. I was there yesterday and the vibe was so much different than here, and way more diverse. What bulldawg said is right except I find the older generation here to be much friendlier, even with us. There's a lot of nice people here but I'll have to say I've had to visit my child's school a couple of times because of incidents.

Where in the world did that census come from?

My question always was how racist is (put name of place here) and how racist are the transplants to (put name of place here)? Generates some thinking I hope.

Hey, watchit! I live in what many consider a hillbilly area!

How to know you live in a hillbilly area:

Your 55 gal garbage barrel is a roadside landmark.

You can tell where a truck is by the sound of its jake brake.

You know when the mailman has had his brakes fixed.

The kids with boomboxes play country music - but never on Sunday.

You live within two miles of at least four churches, one country store, and not much else of interest to outsiders.

People drop off dogs in your area in hopes that you will shoot them before they starve. You try to miss the dogs and shoot the people.

You know where to find at least half a dozen black widow spiders to put in the cars of unauthorized hunters.

You can hear coyotes, wolves, and owls at night, and play with them by calling back.

You are always armed with at least one gun or knife, and figure on calling the sheriff after the fact, since it takes half-an-hour for any police presence.

You live in a cell phone "black hole"

Your second car is a 4wd tractor.

You have at least one propane tank and know not to paint it.

You spend more time with a chainsaw than on the phone.

You know what "a meat and two" means.

Any woman in the area can make a signature dessert that is better than anything you've ever tasted in your life.

With all of that going on, there isn't much time for racism.

I can see where black people may be uncomfortable in north Alabama since whites are the overwhelming majority there, but that's not the case in the rest of the state. Most areas in the southern half of the state are nearly 50% black, and some counties in the central part of the state (Dallas, Wilcox) are over 60% black. Why would a black person feel uncomfortable there?
