Is Gulf Shores and Orange Beach the only public access coast in Alabama?

Dauphin Island - used to have a great beach, Katrina tore it up, but may be in better shape now.

I checked it out, what I could find anyways. Looks like they are ready for business again. I would like to check it out, but it seems expensive and I didn't really see any national chains there.

Are you talking about Atlantic City or little bitty Gulf Shores.Unless you think Hooters is expensive ,I have no idea what you are saying.

I consider anything over 100-125 bucks a night a lil up there....unless I can really justify it by something really awesome.

If you don't see Gulf Shores, you are not missing anything! If you want sun, humidity and sand there are 101 places better in everyway then GS. Local attractions- fried shrimp and rinky dinky souviner shops.

What's the nearest beach from Huntsville then?

What are you looking for when you go to the beach besides a reasonable place to stay? GS has the Littlest Zoo featured on TV plus a water park nearby for the kids. Restaurants of all kinds are available in and around GS. Check out the website below
http://www.gulfshores.com/

Gulf Shores would be the closest beach but if that doesn't suit your fancy then try Pensacola, Destin and Panama City beach FL are a little further away but maybe what you are looking for in a beach.

ok, i didn't realize those were closer options. Any idea how far any of those may be from Huntsville? And for the most part I'm looking for a clean, nice, beach...some attractions (kid friendly) and just chillin'!
