I'm not trying to make them out to be anything other than what they are. I reckon they're incredibly amazing, beautiful(probably got bad breath though)smart, incredibly strong, fast animals with long teeth...docile...in the wild? I don't know too much but I'm going to be prepared for the unpredictable side of their nature. Granted, I think the possibility of an encounter is miniscule, but I'm not going to try my "bear whisperer" technique if charged. Maybe I'm lost but I thought the OT was regarding a hunter not being able to stop an unprovoked, enraged/charging bear with a shot to the vitals with a .375 (big ass calibered rifle for dangerous game, so they say, whomever they are) that ultimately would have and did kill the bear, with a few added shots from his hunting partner, but not before the bear, even though it was supposed to be dead but wasn't acting like a good and docile dead bear, chomped and stomped. Forgive the sarcasm, I'm just funnin' and hope we all never get to have the experience for our and bears sake. And yeah, Go brien, sad about the girl eh?

Thanks for the article. I read it, very tragic, but dang she's out there riding a bike by herself at 1 in the morning near a trout-stream where "wild" bears are known to frequent and feed. Talk about asking for trouble.

Yes many commonly used recreation trails in Anchorage are alarmingly close to bear areas. That was not the only attack that year, but one of many. I think they ended up closing Rover's Run as a result, at least for the rest of that summer. Mama bears have a very protective attitude.
