I was talking with my husband this morning and I may be wrong but I understanding (this is what we were talking about) is that here people pretty much close up and hide in their houses all winter. There is very little to do, it ranges from 40-10 degrees in the winter with rain and snow. But I in no way have a thought that I am prepared for the weather there but I dont really like how Halloween is the last community event until like march or april and I have come to the conclusion that there are a lot of winter activities there because winter is a large part of life. I realize the winters are long but I also realize that people live there who love and adjust to the weather and prepare for it. I was considering getting a 4wd even if not necessary all the time in case we wander out of the city I want to be prepared, plus a larger SUV would be helpful in the move

Your welcome. Good luck!! Sounds like your doing this the right way. Too many people move up here without ever doing the proper research and they leave heartbroken, broke and bitter. You'll do good staying on the course you've plotted.

People in Alaska definitely don't hide out, there are lots of winter things to do outside and inside, depending on where you live. Anchorage has an outdoor carnival/festival every February called Fur Rendezvous and every year there are dog mushing competitions like the Iditarod or the Yukon Quest. Day to day your life in Ketchikan should be like anywhere else, except there aren't roads from there to other towns. It is a coastal town obviously so it will have the feel of many others, you will see totem poles and other cultural items everywhere in addition to the normal things of life everywhere.

I don't know if this is anything which is helpful, but couchsurfing.org has lists of people who are available to meet visitors for coffee/drinks, etc. (let alone laying on their couches) in their respective towns if you are feeling adventurous, which might be nice for a non-tourist experience.I
