Lots of movies and televsions shows have been filmed about gold mining and prospecting. Do you think all of them were investigated and prosecuted for fictionalized and dramatized violations?

How do we know what (if any) permits were pulled or not? How about a filming permit for the area?

How do we know what parts of the show are scripted/acted or not?

Is 'acting' a violation of the law? (For example, in a TV SHOW somone pulls an armed robbery of a store...)

Just some thoughts...

The only good thinthat the show does is that they continually say that it took $250k to get up there and that they need $1000/day to run the operation. I do not know about you, but I do not have that kind of money laying around. Nor do I have a bunch of friends that are willing to work for free in order to split an unknown amount of money.

I also know enough to know that I don't know a thing about mining. If anyone attempts this by themself without any previous expertise (the old man doesn't have that) is just asking for a Darwin Award...

To me, there is no such thing as a "reality tv" - it is all staged. Even the old "Mutual of Omaha" nature shows I watched as kid are reported to have been staged.... Don't trust what you see on TV.

I wouldn't worry about too many people jumping up to AK to mine gold. And if a bunch did, sounds like your economy will get boosted by all that spending.

I need to start a count of how many times the main idiot of the group says "frick" and "fricken."

The last show was pretty funny watching them argue with that Fred guy at every turn - the only person there with an actual clue about mining. If I were there, I'd be picking that guy's brain for every scrap of knowledge he's got about finding gold.

Having spent real time in the northern bush (AK, YT, NWT, northern BC & Alberta) , and employed in the real big mining biz (Northeast Coal, Tumbler Ridge, B.C.) I laugh a lot when watching this show. What it does prove is that urban outsiders are ever more bored with their lives, and they will believe anything, from The Real Housewives of New Jersey/Hollywood/Orange County/Atlanta to The Bachelor to The Worst Cooks of Wherever.

As long as it injects some real capital into the starving economies of small town Alaska, and then the interlopers clean up their mess when they leave (they have to by law, but I don't know if they are actually followed up on this), then I suppose there's some net positive gain.

But let's not take it too seriously, OK?

Precisely, and a good point. I may take this television slop a bit more seriously than is warranted. I'm probably not missing much by not having one. ;-)

"Reality TV" is an oxymoron.
