My boyfriend and I are teachers in NC and looking to relocate. We both have master's degrees and 8+ years of experience. I am certified in many areas (K-12 language arts, social studies, math, and science) and he is certified PE/Health and has extensive experience as an assistant football and head baseball coach. What are our chances of getting teaching jobs? We both have an interest and some experience with special education and have considered trying to add this to our certification. What areas are affordable and fun for young professionals? We would prefer something semi-urban. Is it easy for folks from the "lower 48" to adjust? We are ready for a move and would appreciate any advice you can offer!
Thanks!!

You could probably adjust to Anchorage just fine, though those teaching positions are prime real estate so to speak. Check out the Alaska Teacher Placement website.

alaskateacher.org is your main resource for jobs.

It would be pretty easy for you to get a job in the bush, and possible but not nearly so easy in Anchorage or Fairbanks (and those districts hire late in summer typically).

Some people take right to bush living. Depends I think mainly on how you live down there in the lower 48. People who love the outdoors, and are pretty social, incredibly passionate about teaching, and very open minded and flexible do quite well out here. City lovers don't do so well, or people who hold expectations---any expectations. It's not going to be anything like you imagine it. Many step off the plane, see the town, and get right back on and go home. Honestly. My room mate last year had a nervous breakdown 2 weeks into the school year and went back to Texas. That alaska teacher placement website has loads of information on village life, as well as the Bering Straits School District's wiki page.

A couple questions - what do you mean by semi-urban? Also, why Alaska?

I didn't mean it like that, I meant 'what specifically about Alaska draws you?'. That'd help answer their questions more accurately, I'd think.

No offense warptman, but I know several teachers who have taught recently in Lower Yukon. It's among one of the worst districts to work for right now. I can expand on that if you need me to, but for now I'll just leave it at, STAY AWAY.

I've got teacher friends with a lot of experience in a lot of districts and know the good, the bad, and the ugly (when it comes to bush teaching). If you end up thinking about any specific district/village, drop me an email -- sarah.puffer at nsbsd.org. Be happy to answer questions.

It's all good. Two of my aunties teach for them, as does my uncle. They teach out of their home village of Scammon Bay. My sister teaches for LKSD in a village.
