[quote=Metlakatla;1192432]I work with regional art created by people who live in the North, not with authentic Chinese totem poles.

While I agree that you'll have a better experience on the trails and tours than slopping around shopping, remember that a good majority of those off the ships are over 65.

I guess I don't know much about the cruise ships b/c I don't do them. When I come to Juneau or the SE, I either ferry it up or fly in---stay in the valley with friends, and do lots of hiking. I see the cruise ships and the Tijuana mess you are speaking of, but I mostly steer clear of it.

This thread is interesting. I've never seen people doing it in the shops, but honest to god I wouldn't put it past southerners...
Nevertheless, there is another side to this. One time I was downtown buying something to send to my family down south for a birthday or whatever. (You guys know how it is- they all want something that says Alaska. That, or fudge from the Fudge Co!) I had just gotten back from Whitehorse for vacation, and some Canadian change was jingling around in my pocket mixed with the American.
I went to that big one right next to the cruise docks- it was called Timberwolf then. No idea what it's called now. I got what I wanted and put it on the counter. I counted out my change and accidentally handed the cashier a canadian penny. She gave me the dirtiest look I've ever seen, and explained coldly that Alaska is not part of Canada. I just kind of laughed at her, set my purchase on the counter, took my money, and walked away. I ended up getting whatever it was somewhere else, and without the obnoxiousness...

Interesting post, LACowboy---who would have thought....so is that common practice in stores in southern Cal?

That's funny--over a Canadian penny? LOL. Their money is damn worth more than ours now. Wonder how long it'll be before we're more than glad to take it.

It wasn't then, though. Apparently that .3 cents mattered that much!

You never know. Could be the clerk was working for someone who made a ruckus if the register was off even by a penny. We usually don't worry about them or ask anyone to break paper money because of a couple of cents.

Could be. If it was a quarter or even a dime, I would understand. Maybe the girl was just sick of stupid tourists.

Uh, I just read on yahoo finance that the Canadian dollar is now worth slightly more than the U.S. dollar---we'll be needing that penny back, Xa'at.

I think you're completely correct, Minuteman, but I also think that the carpetbagger offshore merchants are playing a huge role here. The tourists have found that some retailers will bargain with them and in all fairness can't be blamed for asking for deals, but the sometimes attitude when it is explained that bargaining is not how we do business is perplexing at best.

Oh well, it ain't my life---never done it before and don't see it in my future. I just thought a 9-5 type job would be great for the summer since I usually work 12 hour days and don't really get much time to enjoy it.

We're far from the docks and get more travelers than tourists anyway

I've never seen this at the grocery store or the gas station. I wonder what makes it ok in shops?

Sorry, Metlakatla. You snooze you loose!

I wish bargaining was OKAY at gas stations. Prices are ridiculous! When I left Juneau a week ago it was 3.50 a gallon! I'm down south now and it's still 3.20...
