6.7 - I keep thinking the same thing about our warm temps. SO now, next winter we will be buried and frigid.

Awesome pics Warptman.

CCc girl - Stay warm...

I have this sinking feeling that next winter the conditions are going to be reversed. As in the Northeast Us will have a mild winter and Western Canada/US/Alaska will get pummeled.

Ray- I could see that orange glow last night, but I never got to see the green dancing lights because of the clouds. Thanks for posting the picture!

Thanks.

I noticed that the the wind would push the clouds out of the way for a few minutes at a time, so I left home a little after 9:00, and got to North Pole Around 9:30. The wind gusts were so strong that I had to hold the camera strap so it would not slap against the camera and tripod, but it was around 28 degrees over there. I took several photos whenever the cloud cover moved out of the way, up to perhaps midnight, and then left.

This one is a little better, and notice how fast the clouds are moving from left to right on a 10-second exposure

Default Far from recent... photos found in a box

Not recent at all...

Going through a bunch of old photos and came across some prints that were given to me (by who? when?) that show the American Pacific Whaling Company's whaling station in Akutan on the Aleutian chain, and also some pictures of village life. The pictures were probably taken between around 1912 and 1920 by by John N. Cobb, who went on to create the University of Washington School of Fisheries. I worked out on the chain for a number of years, but for the life of me can't remember who gave the pictures to me.

I've sent digital copies to the Unalaska museum and the Aleutians East Borough, and will probably send them to the UAF, which has a good digital photo library.

Anyway, hope you find them interesting. The captions shown on the web page were written in pencil on the back of the prints. (The prints aren't very old, probably from the 1970s or so; no idea where the negatives are.)

The collection - Akutan
