Alaska man plans to go off the grid, spend a year living with a dog on uninhabited island

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Charles Baird is going off the grid for a year.

The 40-year-old oil company employee and filmmaker from Anchorage will move to the mostly uninhabited L******* Island in Alaska’s Prince William Sound at the end of May, completing a dream he’s been contemplating for 17 years.

Baird will build a 12x12 shed to shelter him from the elements, and he plans to hunt and fish and fend off an occasional black bear during his sojourn to the Alaska wilderness.

I am curious as to why his story was picked up by the Washington Post. As the article mentions, lots of people come to Alaska to live off the grid. Just over 20 years ago I was one of them. So why the national interest in Charles Baird?

The article does not go into any detail about his preparation, other than he will be well armed and what I posted above.

I wish him the best of luck.

NOTE: For some reason the CD Censor did not like the word L.a.t.o.u.c.h.e

That isn't that rough of a place to live, high tidal action and at low tide in the tidal pools you can get all the food you want!

I was thinking he was going out towards the Aleutians which are by far harder to live on since there is no trees and tides aren't that high.

Lots of big brown bears in the Prince William Sound area though, so hope he carries a big gun. And there is already quite a few cabins on the island already, hope he doesn't turn out to be the type that breaks in to those.

There is an old copper mine that use to have a lot of buildings there, many have long since collapsed, but good source of building supplies to build from if it hasn't been cleaned out by all the others.

LOL, when I first went there in the 1970's and first heard the name of the island, I thought it was named after something perverse, but didn't know what!

I still don't have any idea on what is perverse about that word... Means 'the touch' in French and there are many people with that last name...

It is French, I suppose that is enough. After all, they are a pretty perverse people.

Why does any single story capture public imagination, whether it's a kid that goes missing or a man who decides to live on an island with a dog for a year? Neither case is unique, but some make headlines and some are virtually ignored.

I don't know, either.

I really like Latouch Island. It wouldn't be too hard to live there. Deer, fish, lots of berries in the fall. Plenty of fresh water. There are some cabins there.

I just got a call last week from someone in Texas who bought an acre there in the 70s and wanted to sell it. I told her to call Wynn Moser. He has other lots on the island for sale.

Nice place with lots of private lots. There is an old mine there...copper mine i think. The last time we were out there we picked up some firebricks from the old kiln. They were all stamped from some place in Missouri. That was kind of interesting, those bricks were shipped from Missouri to L******* Island way back when that mine was in operation.

Edit....Hmmm. Misspell the name by one letter and it's accepted. Like I said, not worrying about spelling is kind of liberating.

The guy claims to be a filmmaker, maybe he has already figured out how to generate interest in his future movie. Seems to be working.
