Heading back up to fish some Silvers again in a week or so (SE), my reel last year was given a pretty good work out and is a little noisy. I picked up a new Berkley 9' rod and am looking for a reel. any recomendations for a good spinning (open face) real? will be using 14 lb line. Last year the biggest Silvers we got were just over 8 lbs. I would like to stay under 70.00 if possible, but want something that will last for years.

Thanks.

Just look at the specifications for all reel brands at "cabelas.com" You will notice that some are designed to resist corrosion by salt water.

Just don't buy a reel that's too heavy for the fishing pole you are using. The fishing pole should show the line-weight you should use. For 10-pound silvers I would use a light rod of medium action designed for 8-15 (max.) pound fishing line. I would use perhaps an 8-10-pound line, and a lightweight reel that can hold around 100-150' of 8-pound line.

Years ago when living in Anchorage I used to catch kinds with light tackle (at least one 45-pound kind) with a 9' graphite rod with line from 12-pound line. Since you never know what will hit the bait, you can always go on the heavy side if you like.

By the way, I prefer reels with a rear drag. These are easier to adjust when fighting a fish on the line. This one looks pretty good because it's lightweight and corrosion resistant, but there are other reels in there that meet the same criteria:

Finally, pay attention to the specifications. If you hold the rod with your right hand, you want to crank the reel's handle with your left hand

Thanks for the help.
I called and Cabelas has the Cabela's Salt Striker Spinning Reel:MODEL:SS-65B
Cabela's Salt Striker® Spinning Reels : Cabela's
It is a 15 lb and should go good with the rod.

I would buy one of the two lightweight reels. The other reels in the chart are quite heavy. Keep in mind that all the reels in the chart (your link) are of high capacity. Even the lightest one still takes 260 yards of 1ver 10-pound line. If you use 15-pound line, one that is thin, you still have room left in the spool for at least 200 yards of line.

However, all depends on the type of rod you are using with the reel. Some are heavier than others.

The larger one was too big. I settled with the SS-40 B. Seems to be a good fit.

Thanks again everyone.

Hope you all have a good weekend.

Isn't it a little early for silvers?

There were plenty in the SE last June. I'm told they are running now.
