Alaska is a big place at 1,482,970 square kilometers, almost three times the size of Spain. Which means that Alaska has a lot of different weather conditions, from the temperate rain forest in the Alaskan panhandle, to the Arctic desert on the north slope, and everything in between. South central Alaska has probably the most moderate climate in Alaska. It doesn't rain as often as the panhandle, and it is not as cold as Interior Alaska. An acre or two on the Kenai Peninsula might suit your needs. Land is a little cheaper in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley around Wasilla and Palmer, and even cheaper further north near Willow, Trapper Creek, and Talkeetna. Alaskans are pretty independently minded, generally keeping to ourselves unless someone needs our help. We respect each other's privacy. That is not to say that Alaskans are hermits. We have events like the Fur Rondy in Anchorage in February, the Talkeetna Bluegrass Festival in July, the State Fair in Palmer during August, and other events in various parts of the state that bring Alaskans together for some good times. Compared to the fuel prices you are paying in Spain, Alaska is a little cheaper. $4.50 per gallon (in Anchorage) works out to about $1.17 per liter, and the dollar isn't as strong as it used to be. Outside of Anchorage the price of gasoline goes up considerably. In Bethel, for example, the cheapest gasoline sells for $5.77 per gallon, or about $1.50 per liter (see Bethel Gas Prices - Find the Lowest Gas Prices in Bethel, Alaska). There are other costs you should also consider. Most of the fresh produce, eggs, milk, meat, and other items in Alaska comes from the lower-48 states. The additional cost of flying in that fresh food adds to the cost. Just about everything in Alaska is either flown or barged into the state. Which makes Alaska one of the more expensive places to live in the US. With regard to taxes, there are no state taxes but several communities throughout Alaska have relatively small sales taxes. By the way, your English is better than my Spanish. ![]() |

Well, the last time I had to put one of my dogs down it was my first German Shepherd, he was a working guard dog, took two bullets, if he had not been there, the bullets would have been aimed at me. Years later I had to put him down, As best I remember, I think I cried for the better part of 4 straight days. I've never met a man yet who can put down a dog without remorse, hope I never do.

Just a day before, someone I know at work and I arranged for her to bring a dog from a shelter to our home so my wife could take a look, and a day after the old dog was put down the new dog arrived. My wife fell in love with the new dog, but cried for days remembering the old one. She still cries to this day, but the new dog has brought a smile to her face. |

I am not spanish but I can relate to what your refering to in regard to the climate and culture. I lived for 3 years in Gibraltar and loved most of my time there with the exception of the heat !
My husband is in the process of getting employment in a rural part of AK at the moment and he tells me that I will need to be prepared to do my shopping online, and that it is essential to be equipped with correct clothing. I willl need to be prepared to forgo trips to the cinema, restaurants, and other activities commonly associated with "civilisation". However, community spirit is usually very very good, and people are usually very welcoming. I have been advised that getting involved with the community and activities will be most rewarding - the key being it will be what you make it. Larger cities in AK probably have a lot more amenities available but I would imagine the more you can research it and get different points of view the better. Good luck and best wishes. |
