My background is MedSurg, ER and also some Home Health. I made a LOT of calls to hospitals to find out info, and I was 1 of a thousand calling to say "I want to move to Alaska." The proof of sincerity was having a start date I could be available AND I had applied and gotten my AK license.
The hospitals in AK pay a very pretty penny for travel nurses and I decided against that route because we planned on moving here and being part of the industry/community. I didn't want to appear as I decieved an employer, and also some contracts bar you from employment with your assigned place for a period of time.
If you only want to "see" what it's like up here for an assignment, you can search for agencies and pick of thousands of 'em that fill openings in AK. I'd suggest you get educated on the travel side then, as it can be like owning your own business. Who would pay for the AK license? What housing is avail? What benfits are paid/not paid? etc.

Dawn, I have been researching Travel Nurse agencies for over 2 years now. I began doing so when I first starting liking the idea of travel nursing. I couldn't do it then because my youngest daughter was still in the nest with 2 years left of high school. Now she is in college and I'm an empty nester. I'm 48 years old and have the world out there waiting. I have been planning this for quite some time very steadily. I'm married and have been so for 27 years. We almost have all our bills paid off, but will continue to keep our house here in NC and just have someone look after the place while we're gone, plus my youngest will be here back and forth from college. I want to choose the travel nurse route, because in all honesty, I will not be relocating in AK because I want to see the rest of the country as well. However, Alaska is THE number one place I want to visit. It is my dream. I just can't figure out what in the heck kind of work my husband can do while we're gone. He works industrial construction and is a welder/electrician.

I completely understand, those are all the same issues we looked at...house/kids/work, etc.
I'll be starting work up there early November. Keep in touch as your plan comes together and maybe we'll see each other!

By all means go to Alaska as a traveler. I personally would suggest going in the winter or spring and staying through the summer.
Providence Healthcare Staffing is the main company that staffs up there and they pay good wages and provide great housing. Leslie Bryan can help you get where you want to be.
Your husband can do what mine did. He was the house-husband did the cooking and cleaning so he was available to travel around Alaska while I was off work. It worked great.
Send me a private message if you have more questions or I can provide you with any needed information.
Do not miss out on Alaska. You will regret it. Just like I regret leaving there.

Just be informed about where you decide to go. The rural areas of Alaska need nurses in a bad way but they are not always the nicest places to go. I have lived in Alaska for 11 years and have just recently become a nurse. I want to travel outside of Alaska, haha. Anyway, be careful and do your homework if you decide to take a travel assignment off the road system (Nome, Dillingham, Barrow, Bethel, Kotzebue, Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Kodiak, etc). It is a different world that you have to be prepared for or you will not like it. Let me know if you want any specific information about a specific area. I'd be glad to help, and Alaska IS AWESOME! Make sure you like winter, though, if you come up now!

Do nursing agencies other than Providence Heathcare Staffing contract there? What type of housing do they provide, and do you need a car? What hospitals are there in Ketchikan? I too am interested in Alaska as a travel nurse. I lived in Sitka and worked for USPHS over 25 years ago. I am an empty nester as well, and will start traveling in January. 25 years ICU and 5 of hospice nursing. Any input would be appreciated.

SEARCH SE Alaska Regional Community Hospital may also be a point of contact. Sitka based as far as I know, but may have outlying clinics and such.

Yes, other compapnies do contract up there, I believe ACES is or was one of them. Personally I had great luck with Providence Healthcare Staffing. They are in no way related to Providence Hospitals in Alaska.
You do need a car, find a company that will provide one, drive up, or take the ferry. I don't think you would regret it.
