Just about everyone in Alaska outside of Anchortown has guns in their home. I show houses all the time and you would be surprised at the amount of guns in peoples homes.

Sometimes people from out of state are surprised when they see a gun in the corner of the master bedroom. I'm not, its normal.

If it's an Alaskan home there are probably guns in it. Sometimes there enough firepower for a platoon. Often there are cases and cases of ammo. And these are people who you would think are respectable people...teachers, doctors, lawyers and such.

I wouldn't want to invade this state without taking that fact into account. There is certainly more than one gun for every resident of the state.

In my bedroom I have two guns on the wall and one in the closet. The two guns on the wall are both .22's, a Rossi 14 shot pump and a Ruger 10/22, and a 20 gauge in the closet.

For years I have carried around an AR-7 in my backpack. It is lightweight (it even floats) and is reasonably accurate between 50 and 100 yards. I have only used it on small game when the opportunity presented itself. I would much rather eat fresh meat when camping than the dehydrated food I normally bring along. If I can use the AR-7 to take a hare or grouse and feed myself that day, then that is one more day I can stay in the bush.

.300 It'll take down caribou so fast you think you missed 'em, very humane method for putting down a dog, and at 3500 fps it feels pretty good if a bear trails you up a hill. Ya gotta admire a round that'll accomplish all that.

Ya can't argue with that.

I could either fix my truck's 4x4 or buy a .300 with my summer job. Leaning toward blowing big holes in things.

Hummmmm, just thinking, this year I fed six families (including mine) with my hunting, years ago I bought my wife a Remington 20ga pump shotgun and a Ruger Single Six 22Mag handgun, we practice about every two weeks, my hunting rifles I shoot every month, it is not like riding a bicycle, proficiency demands practice and since the object is a clean kill shot we go through a bit of ammunition. I feel safer knowing that my wife is proficient with the handguns, she even uses my 41. mag from time to time. If an intruder gets past the two german shepherds, they still have a pump 20 ga loaded with #4 Buck and the handguns to out maneuver, and, at 25 yards, she is down right accurate.

A .45-70 should do, and so a .338 Magnum, or a .375 H&H.

I agree.
At various times I've owned all three, and all are big thumpers on both ends of the barrel...

Default every game animal on the planet

I've read several times that every game animal on the planet has been killed at one point or another by a .22 LR . Many, if not most, of those would have been killed by poachers, as no legitimate or ethical hunter would ever dream of going after big game with such a small round. As a practical consideration, I for one would NOT like to be the one demonstrating that technique on a big brownie or a polar bear.

BTW, I recently read that several of the ammo companies are coming out with lead-free versions of the 22 Mag, particularly for use in California. The .22 Mag is a much easier engineering challenge going lead-free, since it already uses jacketed bullets. The venerable .22 LR is going to be a much harder round to "Kalifornicate".

Although Californias lead-bullet ban is of course nothing more than back-door gun control, the excuse they're using among the reason-free anti-everything crowd is that California Condors might, somehow, eat a bit of lead bullet scrap in an offal pile and end up poisoned....riigghhht....
