Not a whale, but it's a whale oil lamp (no I don't have whale oil in it, it's vegetable oil), from the 1840's, one of my favorite lamps I have:

OMG what a beautiful lamp!!! pack it really well for your trip to AK!! some day I hope you get to burn real whale oil in it!!!
I have what I call a TinkerBell oil lamp...tiny bit of a thing that has been in hubby's family for generations....some things you just cannot part with!!!

Thank you! It is a nice lamp, I found it at a yard sale. If nothing else, New England is a nice place to find antiques like this!

Got any pics of that little lamp?

nope but I will take one tomorrow and post it for you...it is sweet..when I was selling off stuff many many antique dealers wanted it but...ahhh it has been in the family and it is really cute!!

ya know we're gonna get in trouble for go'n off thread!!??? but heck, I have been interested as I have been told this little tiny lamp was designed to burn really heavy oil to get the most hours out of the oil...well I would love to find someone that can tell me what "heavy oil" is...whale, sperm, hemp??? will post pic's tomorrow!!

I'd have to see a pic to know, and it's possible with lamps that original burners have been replaced...for instance, most whale oil lamps have had kerosene burners put on them, making whale oil burners a bit scarce...heavy oils are vegetable oils, whale oil, lard oil, etc. Usually the burners are set up to warm the oil as the lamp burns (notice the long metal wick tubes on my lamp going into the oil container to warm the oil up).

It's on topic, it's about whales...sorta...
