My daughter has been asking around about them as part of her research for palmeralaska.net
It sounds like they may not have been utilidors after all. Or at least not completely utilidors. During the war they were used as bomb shelters and safe ways to go from building to building. This info is still somewhat in the rumor stage.
When/if she gets real solid info she will put it on the website.
Haven't seen any predatory penquins popping their heads out of manholes lately...but I'll be ready with my baseball bat if I do.

The U of A Fairbanks has a very extensive set of tunnels under it as well. They started locking/blocking them after it became a fact that too many pregnancies were happening down there...
Rumor was that there was a lot of groping around in the dark since it was more fun to feel you way through them instead of using lights...
Was a great place to party for the College kids in the winter....
Besides, it started out as a mining college and they had to practice somewhere!!!

I would love to see some photos of these tunnels, just to see if they are similar to what I've been in before, outside of AK.
And by the way, I hear, from a reliable source, that Guido has some of his associates in the Valley area just "biting" at the chance to come out of hiding.

Interesting Seattle has a whole underground.. don't know that much about it. Deadwood SD had a tunnel system because the Chinise were not allowed in town but they had a whole city they lived in underground..
