Hmm...zombie thread alert. I'd be surprised if the OP is still even wondering...the question was actually asked 10 years ago.

WOW! Does that seem high? I know we don't have state income tax but property tax seems incredibly high. Whew! I have a ranch in Montana where I pay $1400 a year total.
Property tax in Alaska, specially around Anchorage and Fairbanks, is quite high compared to most places in the lower-48. Seniors get a property-tax break at the age of 65, however.

Dang! I just answered to this old property tax question

How do they get away without a property tax? Someone has to pay for infrastructure, schools, roads - police - fire.

The point is not just property tax, but the very high AK property tax. Well, not as high as NY and CA, but higher than a few other states. The cost of living in Alaska is quite high, too.

Property tax:

Alaska is in the list of 15 States with the highest cost of living:

And you won't believe how expensive medical and dental care is. For example, dental implants for the top jaw costs around $20,000, and the same for the lower jaw ($40-60K for 4 implants x jaw depending on bone structure). Medical is extremely expensive, so much it is that most medical insurance companies allow you to travel and reside at other States for the duration of some of the medical procedures.

Some people even fly to Mexico to get procedures done because it is so expensive here, both medical and dental.

I lived in Alaska before it became a state. I know how expensive grocery items can be and are even now.
We always went to Seattle for our medical - it's just the way it was and apparently still is.

But I keep seeing properties offered that specifically say "no property taxes". One is on Lake Minchumina.

I go to an esthetician in town and she and her husband just got back from Mexico to get their dental work done. Next time I see her I'm going to ask her more about it... not because I want to go, but because I'm curious.
