OK, so you are looking for reds in the $40 range. Now we are getting somewhere.

There are a ton of options at that price point or lower.

Domaine Drouhin for Pinot Noir
Chappellet Vineyard Mountain Cuvée or Pulenta Estate Gran Corte VII Alto Agrelo for a Bordeaux blend
Columbia Crest Cabernet Sauvignon H3 Cabernet Sauvignon
J Bookwalter Winery Subplot No 24

Look to Argentina, Spain, Washington State and 3rd growth Bordeaux for the best values.

I also like the Italian Pinot Noir.
our budget is about like yours, so it is rare for us to buy a bottle over $10. I don't think you are the exception by anymeans...I will add we don't drink Chiantis, but not because we don't like it. As for Aldi's, unfortunately our Aldis doesn't sell wine cause the county has just gone wet. Hopefully they will soon carry it..We can go to Aldi's in Mo, but it is 30 miles and it just never enters our minds. We have heard, they have some far, cheap wines.

Canoe Ridge - Wines

Just ordered a case of this wine. Had a bottle last night with cheese for dinner.

BTW...this wine is $27 a bottle, currently on sale at Safeway for $12. When you buy a case, you get an additional 30% off.

I have quite a wine cellar, when I find a bottle I do enjoy, I buy a case.

Wines | J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines

I also enjoy the merlot...above.

I'm big into the old vine Zins right now. Seeing as how I live in the Zin capital of the world it makes it easy to try LOTS of smaller vintners that you won't find at Bevmo or Costco.

mnita, hopefully your ALDI will start to stock some wine soon. Honestly, it is really the BEST place to buy decent wine for cheap. Some of the best wine I have ever had has come from this store, even though the selection is small. And they carry a pretty good Malbec and it is only $4.99! Between the wine and their great chocolate, about every other day either I or my husband will say, "God, I love ALDI!" LOL

My favorite "common" (i.e., I can go pick it up at any time) red wine is Justin Vinyards "Iscoceles" red blend. Great tasting free run red wine.

BevMo usually has it and Whole Foods always has it. About $60-$75 dollars per bottle depending on the year.
