Most of the Latino growth was fueled by immigration and most of that was basically Mexican immigration. Right now Mexican immigration is at an all time low point, so whatever growth of the Hispanic population will be natural growth. The meaning of this is that the newer Latino generations will be much more americanized than many people are anticipating and the actual Latino influence on the US culture will be less than what most people fear it will be.
This will happen as long as Mexican migration doesn't picks up again. If Mexican migration does picks up, then Latino influence will essentially be Mexican influence. Greater Mexican influence and power at all levels of US society.
Just cause Mexicans arent coming as much any more, doesnt mean the Hispanic population will be stagnant or it will be just natural growth. There are plenty Hispanics still coming in from PR, DR, El Salvador, Guatemala, Colombia, as well as other places.
Infact even tho, Mexican immigration is at an all-time low, Puerto Rican migration is at an all-time high.

Can Puerto Ricans really be considered immigrants? Those other nationalities also don't immigrate in large enough numbers to make as big of an impact as Mexicans have.

Not really. However, they are still Hispanic. They have hispanic culture, was colonized by the Spanish, they speak spanish as their native tongue, most are of mixed race background (partially Spaniard) ..... soo they are Hispanic/Latino. But immigrants.. No
The Mexican American population is at 31 million as of 2010, by 2020 it would probably be 37 mil mainly natural growth.
The Puerto Rican American population is at 4.6 million as of 2010, by 2020 it would probably be 6.6 million both migration and natural growth.
Those other nationalities are growing just as fast.

Generally brown skin, varies to some degree. Often "exotic" looking features, especially the women. I know it's popular to be politically correct but I live 5 miles from the Mexican border, there is such a thing as a typical looking Mexican even if saying so is unpopular.
True, Mexicans have "un nopal en la frente", meaning that they have a cactus on their face. What that actually means is that they look undeniably Mexican. Now, the question is, what does a Mexican look like? EASY!
A Mexican looks like an Amerindian or Mestizo. Take George Lopez for instance, he looks like your typical Amerindian from Mexico, Central America, or South America. George Lopez is the perfect example of what people think Mexicans usually look like. Most Mexicans are Mestizo, with a significant portion of the population being of pure Amerindian descant.
Selena Quintinilla looks like your stereotypical Mexican, she's has obvious Amerindian features.
So this basically shows that about 2/3rds of Hispanics in the US are Mexicans. Also consider that many of the other groups are strongly concentrated in the Northeast metro areas and parts of Florida, so outside of those regions you won't really find much "Hispanic" diversity at all.

I think they can be considered immigrants, even though all are US citizens and there's virtually nothing (other than tight pockets in some) stopping them from moving to the mainland if they truly want to. But PR is an unincorporated territory of the USA and technically, whatever is unincorporated isn't quite part of the country. That's the reason PR has the option of joining the USA or going free, because they are not quite free but not quite joined either.

I've always been curious as to what is a typical looking Mexican. Perhaps I'm too open minded or am against stereotypes. I also know several Mexicans with different phenotypes. Even among the looks of ppl that others want to stereotype as looking Mexican, those group of stereotypical Mexicans don't even look alike.

Puerto Ricans are already legally automatic U.S. Citizens with their commonwealth relationship with the USA.
Cubans have wet foot dry foot policy and are given automatic asylum and citizenship when in the USA.
These aspects of PRs and Cubans make them different and unique and have an "advantage" to other Hispanic/Latino groups.

Fillipinos, Samoans, and Guam, and Equitoreal Guinea can be considered Hispanics and Latinos.
Hell, Haitians can be included as Latino or Latin rather.
