Tell us your experience, please. We're moving to Eagle River, but we'll be all over the state. Thanks.

After a month of dropped calls and missed messages I was told there is only 1 Verizon tower in the entire state. I now use AT&T

I moved up here with my Verizon phone. I only have service in Anchorage. I also have a USB port for my laptop from Verizon. Again, it does not work outside of Anchorage. I do not have picture text capabilities like I had in Colorado. When I talked with a Verizon dealer, he commented that the towers here do not support the pictures. I can still text however. I am going to get a cell phone here, but I am doing some research. I have traveled to several areas in the Western Part of Alaska. GCI has been working on service in those areas. I have not seen AT&T service in those areas. I think it will depend a lot on where you want to go. Unfortunately, I travel for my job along the Yukon where I don't have much service.

Verizon (and Sprint), being a CDMA network will have issues. AT&T and GCI are GSM, which practically dominates the state.
The networks are not compatible. You're propably gonna have to buy a new phone.

Check GCI's website for the coverage, they're really working hard on expanding their network coverage.

We had Verizon when we moved up here last September and in March when we went to LA we renewed our contract because we get decent service in Alaska. We have used our Verizon phones in Anchorage with no problems and yesterday North of Eagle River and in Wasilla we received calls with no problems. We have also used our phones in both Homer, Seward, Soldotna and in between in some locations. In Kodiak we have used our phones around Kodiak itself. I was told they have service in Ousiniki and Port Lions but we haven't tried either place. GCI service didn't work because of dropped calls. We finally dropped GCI for that reason. We do travel to the lower 48 regularly so we need the service down there. My phone has worked all over the lower 48 with no problems so we elected to stay with Verizon.

We also came up from the lower 48 with our Verizon. We use the friends and family connections a lot. We have had pretty good luck with reception except when we were on the way from Canada to Tok. Once we got to Tok no problem. Have also used it down on the Kenai, and over to Valdez. My daughter sent me a picture text from Vermont on Sunday which I received with no problem. I have no experience with the other companies so I can't really do a comparison.

Verizon is CDMA, which means they use ACS towers. If you are moving up here I highly suggest going with ACS over AT&T. I switched to AT&T from ACS when my contract was up since I get a discount through my employer. AT&T call quality and dead spots suck. Oh yeah, not to mention their customer service.
