I am 31 yo African American looking to re-locate to Arizona which has always been a dream since I was a teenager. I have done some research but I think that I would have the best results if I came straight to the source. I am a single mother looking to move from New York City. I am growing tired of the City that Never Sleeps and I just want a better life for myself and my son. I am currently in a position in a non-profit organization, but I have other skills, but would like to stay in a field that I am helping people better themselves. I just want my 9 year old to have a chance at life and I think we can do it in Arizona...any tips on finding a job or an apartment would be greatly appreciated...Thank you all in advance

Are you thinking of the Phoenix area, Tucson, or other areas? AZ is a big state. If you want more info, you should give more specifics.

For us, we moved here from the DC area 4 yrs ago and have been very happy. We live in Gilbert (Phoenix suburb) and we really like it a lot. It's a great place to raise kids and we've found everyone very friendly. It's going to be a LOT different from NYC though. Have you visited here at all? I'd recommend a few visits before you proceed with your move. While I love it here, there are many things about the east coast that I miss and, if you've done much reading here on this board, you know that AZ isn't for everyone. However, if you've done your homework and made many visits so you know a little about what you'd be getting into (primarily I mean the summer weather and the "non-east coast feel" if that makes any sense), then your transition should go well.

As for non-profits, there won't be as many job opportunites in that field as there are back east. I worked in non-profit in NoVa and was surprised at how few there were here and at how low the salaries are. Of course, cost of living is lower here too.

Best of luck with your decision.
