Travel Help - Phx 8/31!
I'm going to Phoenix Labor Day weekend, but am planning on driving out to San Diego on Sunday morning. I'm going to be staying in Buckeye.. realistically, how long will it take me to get to San Diego? I'm planning a kayaking tour and I have to be there by 11 am. By what time would I have to leave Buckeye? Are there any construction delays on the way that I should be aware of?

Not sure if there are any construction delays - but we usually pace ourselves 5 hours - driving time

That sounds about right. If you drive fast (80-90) you will make it in 4 to 4.5 hours. I'm assuming that you will be taking Hwy-85 to I-8. There is an immigration check point along I-8. We were stopped behind traffic for about 10 minutes. They let us through, but pulled out the guy in front of us for additional checking. The border patrol has a german sheperd. They lift it into a tub a water every now and then to keep it cool - pretty cute.
Does anybody know what those white metal blockades are along the south side of I-8? It looks like they are blocking ATVs or something. They certainly wouldn't stop foot traffic.

Really?? Well good to know.. I had no idea. Do you just need to show 'em your ID and insurance?
edit - We are also traveling back from SD to PHX after dark... is this safe enough for 2 women traveling alone?

We did not need to show any ID or insurance. Perhaps if you are pulled over, you might have to show ID.
Safety is an interesting question. I-8 has fewer cars, so if you had a flat or something, there would be fewer passers-by. I-8 is probably less lit as well. If you are traveling at night, I-10 might be safer, but it will be about 60 minutes longer. To take I-10 you have to drive north on I-15 through Temecula to CA-79 to I-10.
