I have just accepted a job in Dragoon. Not a ton of money but reasonable to my needs. Can anyone tell me anything at all about this area?

Are you going to be working at "The Thing"? That is all I know to be near Dragoon. Unless I missed something Dragoon is a dusty tiny cluster of mobiles and houses just off I-10 SE of Tucson where "The Thing" tourist trap is. It is located in the high desert. It is pretty near Benson where you would find any shopping you needed. I would think you could live in Benson and drive out to your job, if you needed a more civilized feel.

Yes, I have been offered a job at The Thing. I am seriously considering it.

Do you know what school would be serving an elementary student? Are there any special services offered at the schools in the area?

I am just looking for somewhere quiet and peaceful for my 7 year old. He is mildly autistic and his doctor recommended somewhere very slow paced and quiet. My son has trouble processing information and becomes overloaded and stressed out easily.

Does this sound like somewhere that fits the bill? BTW, we love the outdoors and I don't mind traveling to shop.

Thanks

Well I'll be darned. I think your best bet is something in/around the Benson area. It is maybe 20 minutes from Benson to "The Thing". Benson is a nice place, growing with a lot of retirees moving there. It is in a grassland, scrub brushy, small tree area of Arizona. They have pricky pear cactus there but no iconic saguaros.

If you had a place right there in Dragoon, it would be about as peaceful as it gets. Benson, too, is just a small laid back town. The weather is awesome, summer highs in the 90s and frequent afternoon showers. You can get by with a "swamp cooler" instead of a/c. Tucson is pretty easy to get to as is Sierra Vista.

You should google Benson AZ schools. My guess is that Dragoon is in that school district and, if not, they can direct you. They could help you with the specific questions you have. Good luck. I've stopped several times at "The Thing." with the kids over the years.

I checked Benson schools website and they have a bus schedule there for Dragoon, so that is the right district. Here's their web pages:

Yup, I'm one of those future retirees looking to move to the Benson area. Already bought my land 10 minutes from Benson and LOVE the area. The weather is wonderful - not too hot in the summer, not too cold in the winter. As mentioned, it's nice open grassland with scattered prickily pear and mesquite trees. Average rainfall in Benson is 14 inches or so (we had just over 17 inches last year).

Thanks so much for your replies.

I am very optimistic about the potential of this area.

I called the Benson school district today. The Director of Special Services said that they do not do much for special needs students but they do try to take into consideration the needs of the student. He seemed friendly.

LOL, I just found out I have to get a PO Box as there is no mail service here. The lady at the post office said, "Just have people mark it with your name and General Delivery, Dragoon AZ..........snickers... I am moving to OpieVille.

I am looking forward to discovering the area. Thanks again for the input.

Default Re: moving to Dragoon

Vespor,

Dragoon is a very small town but close to Benson. It is off the freeway a few miles in the grassland. Benson is nice but mostly in a "hole" where the land dips down to the San Pedro river....but still nice and smallish.

We were in the area looking for a home this past December. I will try to insert 3 pictures, the desert scene is outside Benson looking towards the hills leading to Texas Canyon where "the Thing" is. The picture with the semi is on the freeway just before "The Thing." The older building is in Dragoon, it is not occupied just neat looking.
