If lakes and boating are high on your list, you might consider the far east valley of Phoenix. East Mesa, Apache Junction or maybe Gold Canyon. Lots of incredible lakes around these parts. Saguaro Lake, Canyon Lake, Roosevelt Lake, and my favorite, Apache Lake. Saguaro and Canyon are minutes away. There are others such as Bartlett Lake and San Carlos Lake that aren't far away as well.
