That's because exterminators (pardon me if anyone on here is one) are stupid. Listening to them talk about the bugs they kill is maddening to us entomologists (professional and hobbyist alike). The vast majority of exterminators know NOTHING about the bugs they profess to be knowledgeable about. Its laughable! They like to scare homeowners into buying more treatments, I swear. They treat these critter like they're Satan himself, with complete disregard to their environmental role.


There are many species of scorpion in AZ. The most prevalent are the stripe-tailed scorpion (Vaejovis confusus) and the bark scorpion (Centruroides arizonensis/exilicauda). The bark scorpion's sting is the most dangerous, but only really to infants, elderly, and those with bad immune systems. The biggest species is the AZ desert hairy scorpion (Hadrurus arizonensis). Most scorpion venom is akin to a honey bee's. Read: weak. Nothing to worry about.
