Sen. John McCain has brain tumor, doctors say

Hopefully he does the right thing and steps down but this is the problem with career politicians they stay in til they die.

Tragic. Wish nothing but the very best for John McCain and his family.

My mother had a glioblastoma. She lasted 3 months. The tumor looks like tentacle so it's very hard to remove all of it from the brain. He's about to get very sick and no way can continue his political duties. The good thing is there is no pain with this cancer.

McCain has gold-plated congressional healthcare, unlike nearly all of his constituents in Arizona- he may well end up like robo-Cheney and outlive your grandchildren.

If Sen. John McCain were to leave the Senate before his term ends in 2022, the governor would decide who fills the vacancy.

McCain, who revealed Wednesday that he had been diagnosed with a brain tumor, made no indication he intends to step away.

"Further consultations with Senator McCain's Mayo Clinic care team will indicate when he will return to the United States Senate,” his office said in a statement.

But were circumstances to require that McCain be replaced, that person would have to be a Republican, as McCain is, and would serve until the next general election, which happens every two years in Arizona. Whoever was elected would then fill out the rest of McCain's term, according to state law.

What if McCain leaves office? Here's how the process works

Some pretty harsh comments here. Regardless of your political views of Senator McCain, he is facing a very difficult prognosis. He has also served our country faithfully in various ways for many years, although I have not always agreed with his views or his votes.

That should not be an issue now. Sending best wishes for the best possible outcome, and many good days ahead.

Edited to add that I hope this thread does not get shut down as did the similar one in "Politics", due to trollish and hateful comments and deservedly harsh replies (all of which were deleted).

I assume he enjoys what he does as a Senator, but at his age and with this diagnosis, just retire and enjoy the rest of your life, no matter if it's 6 months, 1 year, 5 years, or 10 years and longer.
