I was wondering what cool walkable areas there are in Tucson and Phoenix, maybe other cities in Arizona, where there's a lot of unique stores, restaurants, and bars clustered in an urban setting? I'm trying to think of an example, but I'm not really familiar at all with the cities. I'm driving out next week, I plan on going to Bisbee, then 2 days in Tucson, maybe a day in Phoenix, then I'm not sure.

Areas that are popular with hipsters too, I don't know if that's the right word, but just sort of hip areas as well.

Phoenix area: downtown, Roosevelt Row, Mill Avenue District in Tempe, and Old Town Scottsdale are the main walkable urban areas. To a lesser extent, you can check out downtown Glendale, Camelback East/Biltmore, midtown, and Kierland.

Tucson area: the only areas I'm somewhat familiar with that are walkable & urban would be downtown and the area near the U of A. If I'm not mistaken, the streetcars run from downtown to U of A and back.

Downtown Prescott and Jerome are pretty cool areas to check out. Not huge, but plenty of bars and shops to walk around and visit.

Tucson between the Mercado (just west of I10 and Congress) and UofA is pretty walkable and there's a street car connecting it all together. It's probably the most traditional feeling downtown area in Arizona in my opinion. The area immediately south of Downtown along Stone is pretty hipster these days, kind of like a newly discovered area.

Phoenix is detailed above. It's a nodal metro, not a traditional feeling metro, but the most walkable areas are Tempe north of Apache and south of the 202, Old Town Scottsdale, and Downtown Phoenix (especially just north of it by the Universities). The most "hipster" area of Phoenix is probably the Roosevelt/Garfield area just north of the high rise clusters west to Grand.

Prescott is walkable especially in the central square. It's more western feeling.

Jerome is pretty cool, but small and a bit touristy. Bisbee is fairly similar.

Flagstaff's downtown area is walkable and has bars and whatnot.

I would highly recommend Bisbee if that's the part of the state you're eyeing spending most of your time in. If you're hoteling it, stay in the old downtown, think Copper Queen or a B&B. Everything's walking distance there. Better yet, or if you have another night to kill, stay in Tombstone close to Allen street. They have a new brewery there, and a few other hangouts... the Crystal Palace is a must, just to say you went.

A lot of great suggestions, thank you. I'll try to rep everyone as I can. I can't wait to go to Arizona again, it's honestly my favorite state, and it's been way too long.

Consider 4th Ave. in Tucson - plenty of bars and a record store or two. Nice party vibe to it, too.
