Phoenix definetly has its nice areas. I would opt for Avondale over Laveen.
However, working in either you have a vast variety of places to live outside these areas.
Both are close to the arrrowhead area. Which is a VERY nice part of northwestern phoenix.
you could live around there, or even more north.

Boston is also a very appealing place, however you already mentioned the snow issue from michigan, dubbed with a large amount of humidity in the summer.

Default Don't move to Bakersfield or Fresno

I have lived in CA and am familar with both towns, they are the armpit and a$$hole of central CA respectivly.

I can't think of one reason other than to be closer to family that I would choose Bakersfield or Fresno over the Phoenix Metro.

ditto what Trojan said, Fresno & Bakersfield aren't even an option (rednecks, cow-smell, high cost, crime, etc.)

As for your other options (in AZ):
Laveen = cheap housing, but higher crime in some areas
Avondale = heard nice things about it from those that live there. A little too "cooky cutter" suburbia for my taste, but to each their own.
Yuma = hot, dusty, and boring
