Why Arizona's freeway cameras will shut off and what's next
Here it is in today's Republic: the reasons why the photo radar speed cameras are going to be turned off in July. Although, it's not listed in the Q&A section of the article, the fact that only 30% of citations are being paid appears to be one of the main reasons for terminating the contract. As I stated in many other threads: this SCAMera program has been completely about revenue generation ... and now with evidence that the cameras haven't even brought in the expected revenue (and much of the profit going to Redflex), it's a no win situation for the state.
With that in mind, Brewer did the right thing by letting the contract expire on the freeway cameras. I look at it this way: Napolitano forced this camera program through with blinders on, and it has turned out to be a huge boondoggle. It took her successor to unscrew what Nappy screwed up. Turnabout is fair play in this case ... so the ones who strongly support the speed cameras are going to have to deal with them being turned off, just like the opponents had to deal with the presence of the active cameras for well over a year.

That is why I always jumped in every photo thread urging people not to pay them. The same thing can happen on the city cameras if enough people catch on.

Not only that, but the entire speed camera program on the freeways actually started a few years ago when the city of Scottsdale approved them on the Loop 101 ... which was an
illegal move on their part. Then when Napolitano approved them statewide without a public vote, that raised some serious issues too ... especially when she ADMITTED that they were put in place in hopes of paying down the budget deficit.
This is why I really can't understand how anybody who is strongly opposed to the photo radar program would want to support somebody like Terry Goddard for Governor. He FAVORS these cameras, as do many Democrats for that matter. Hats off to Jan Brewer. I had doubts about her at first, but I think she at least shows a ray of hope compared to our last poor excuse of a Governor!

I got one of these ridiculous tickets from the city of Tempe last summer, but after reading through these forums I tossed it in the trash. Thank you to everyone who posted on the subject, because otherwise I wouldn't have realized that I had the option to ignore it.

EVERYONE MUST KEEP ONE THING IN MIND: Not all cameras will be "turned off". ONLY those on the Freeways.WILL REMAIN ON . Again, the cities can and it appears will, continue to operate their speed camera's (including the movable ones) and their red light cameras.

It's coming as long as there are enough signatures. Photo enforcement is 0 for 10 when put to a public vote, so if it gets to ballot, consider the cameras gone.
