Back in the seventies in AR, the stores were all closed on Sundays, we only went into town once a week-on Friday to go to the bank and grocery store, people stopped in the road to talk with their windows rolled down. Nobody had to call before they stopped by to visit.
One night about sundown our nearest neighbor came roaring into our driveway in his datsun b210/coon hunting vehicle, turns out it was the neighbours son, and he was all excited because their redbone hounds had a coon treed. (the coon was up the tree, the dogs were below).

We he wanted to know if he could borrow some 22 shells, so my dad went into his gun cabinet, and managed to find about 10. Well I talked him into letting me go too, I was 9 and full of energy and curiosty.
We took the Datsun thru places a 4x4 wuddint go and found his dad sittin on a stump, 12 gauge broke down over his shoulder, spot lightin the coon and spittin levi garrett every other second.
He was real proud we had brought back some shells. He slowly loaded his little Ruger pistol, in which I had serious doubts as to wheter he could hit anything with it. Well he told his son, Sam, to shine the light while he shot the coon. Maybe I should say here that the reason he didnt shoot the coon with the 12 gauge was becasue he didnt want to ruin the hide. Anyway Sam shined the light at the coon, Sam Sr raised the pistol and unloaded...on the branch about ten feet ABOVE the coon, well then he got all excited..and grabbed the shotgun and shot at the poor animal with it..didnt hit it, but hit the limb he was on, knocking him down into the creek below.

Well the coon was in the water, Sr was cussin, Jr was laffin, and I wasnt saying nuthin. The temp was about 35 out that night and the dogs were barking but werent about to jump into the water below, so old Sr looked at the dogs, then eyeballed Jr, then the dogs then Jr, I guess he was playing any many might moe, but eventually grabbed the dogs and threw them into the water. The dogs hit the water, and decide they didnt like it, so turned around and swam back in our direction, of course the coon was gone, but now the dogs were tangled up in thick bushes and Sr had to climb down to the waters edge to try and help them out, about the time he got to the side he slipped..fell head first into the muddy creek, hollering.."help me son, Help me!" well ole Jr got over there to help, but just as he was grabbing Srs hand, he slipped as well, right into the cold water...I just slowly turned and decided my best bet was to walk home If you like this one, I got a hundred more, right up here in my head-lol
