Default Writing a Novel set in Arkansas

Hi all!

I'm doing research on my next novel set in rural Arkansas. I am looking specifically for swamp areas. I need a place where my heroine can run to and disappear into. Also, a swamp area that squatters can inhabit without being bothered by the general public. Is anyone familiar with swamp areas? Also, any details about vegetation, people, religion, jobs, etc....I'd love!

Thanks!!

Wink Swamppy Arkansas huh?

Check out Mercer Bayou in Miller county right outside of Fouke. Pretty swamppy and nasty, not to mention secluded, and some parts are only accessible by boat. It is on the sulfur river about 15 -30 minutes outside of Texarkana, Texas.

Default Your search is over!

The place you are looking for is the Big Woods region of Eastern Arkansas. This includes the swamps and forests of the Cache River Basin. The thought to be extinct ivory-billed woodpecker (sometimes calle the 'Lord God' bird) was rediscovered in the Cache River Wildlife Refuge in Monroe County in 2004.

I'm in agreement with Larry's assessment

I grew up in these swamps (we call em the bottoms)... fished Mercer all my life... Days creek backs up into my family's back yard when Sulphur River used to flood...

check out "the legend of Boggy Creek".... I camped, fished and swam in Boggy Creek as a kid...

Default The Scatters

Check out Bayou Meto WMA, aka The Scatters, off HWY 79 about half way between Pine Bluff and Stuttgart. Rumors have it people have gone in there hunting and fishing and never come back out.

Default Oops

Just saw the original date of the first post. This book has probably been written and is in paperback by now.
