Poverty statistics suggest that between 1981 and today China's poverty rate has fallen from 80% to 10%. Half of that change happened between 1981 and 1987 and half has happened since 1987. India's poverty rate in the same time fell much more modestly from 60% to 40%.

Are these figures actually representative of a significant improvement in quality of life though? While neoliberals often say that global capitalism has "lifted millions out of poverty", often times doesn't this mean little more than they went from communal farm life and making practically no hard currency to working at a sweatshop for $2 an hour in miserable and polluted conditions?

I also highly doubt that hundreds of millions of Chinese and Indians living industrialized modern lifestyles is sustainable, unless those countries go green and go green very quickly. I'd much rather live in rural England in 1800 than live in Manchester in 1850 even though in the latter I'd be making more money.

Is China's growth mostly a mirage and only benefiting a small percentage of their people? How much better is life in China and India today than it was in 1990 really?

Their poverty might be down but it's only because they work 16 hour shifts every day.

China has some of the worst human rights in the world.

Sometimes you gotta wonder about comments like this....

They usually come from people who have never stepped foot, let alone worked, in China.

China and India are trying to achieve the status of the US. Our democrat leaders are doing everything in their power to make that happen and plunge us down to their depths.

But yeah I agree with you. China has some of the most stellar work conditions in the developed world.

Actually the Chinese work week is not that bad, but I think certain companies work people much longer than that against Chinese law. Including the companies there that make your Apple products.
