We are planning on visiting Istanbul over Christmas and New Year.
Does Turkey celebrate Christmas and New Years? Any Christmas trees and decorations in malls and on streets?
Will things be closed on Christmas?

newyears yes christmas well the orthodox church has some ceremonies
if that is your thing do visit other than the above mentioned its just another day (for some with more alcohol consumption and abit of celebration) a traditional turkish house would have a family gathering eat some turkey(an yes in english it sounds interesting play bingo etc some houses do have trees regardless of religion in malls yes not exactly what you would expect more for setting the mood to to sell goods rather than any cultural significance
for new years evening the young and the dumb in more populated city centers would go out and gather to drink sing be jovial etc in short do visit and enjoy yourselves
