Many reasons. For example, (1) very few Thais, Vietnamese or Japanese live in China (though there are more now). (2) those cultures are not exotic enough in China, compared to them in western countries. (3) Chinese cities like Beijing and Shanghai all have little foreign (no matter where) influence, compared to other mega cities in the world. (4) Chinese are known to hate foreign food...

(1)Um yeah.

(2)Um probably.

(3)I thought Shanghai had a lot of Western influence. Not much from other parts of Asia though.

(4)Idk about this. The Chinese I know like foreign cuisines just fine.

Shanghai, GZ, SZ, and the more recently built-up parts of Beijing feel more Western than Asian in many areas, and their urban planning used quite a bit of North American and European conventions in terms of street and sidewalk width, etc. These cities were planned to be "international" and it shows. Hell, look at the apartment towers that are going up all over China, which are 70-120 sq/m, use Western-style toilets, and generally use Western-style interior design.

McD's, KFC, Pizza Hut, BK, Papa John's, etc all do a brisk business. Potato chips are popular snacks, hot dogs can be found everywhere, the Chinese love European-style sweets and bread... Sushi is pretty popular and you can find Ajisen Ramen places all over... to say that Chinese "hate" foreign food is somewhat heavy-handed and not really accurate. Maybe some older folks, or people who consciously reject foreign influences, but otherwise? I don't see it.

I actually find it sad to see so many countries adopting this sort of modernization. Can't they be more unique in their own development? Because in the end, every country might have the same thing all over!

By Shanghai's Western influence I was referring to that quarter filled with lots of Western colonial architecture. But yeah the modern buildings are all Western as well. I forgot about that lol.

Yeah, we have a colonial quarter in GZ as well, Shamian. There are parts that look like London, NYC, Rome, etc. Pretty cool.

Most of the buildings from the mid-century on up are similar in general look to Soviet buildings, though the Chinese tended to cover theirs in tile rather than leaving them raw concrete.

I said "compared to other mega cities in the world" (nyc, London, Paris, Tokyo), and we were talking about culture.

In the US, people eat (Americanized) Asian, Mexican, Italian... food regularly. The majority of Chinese people try foreign food several times a year, at most. Yes, young people like fastfood, but most Chinese are not young people. Even those young people don't really like authentic western food (not fastfood). If you don't believe me, just try persuading your Chinese friends to eat cheese.

We are talking about culture here, not modern architecture.

Non-sense; then you never studied anything about the Chinese past history. The Chinese were a culture of highest learning when most of western Europe where in dark ages. The Chinese were first among Asian cultures. Some of the inventions of China were in fact stolen then brought to western Europe that created its empire status. Gun Powder being the first example.
