My wife, daughter and I have decided to move to Decatur and have narrowed our search to Oakhurst and Winnona Park. I have two unrelated questions:

1) Are there any streets/areas within these neighborhoods to avoid while conducting my search of homes?

2) I noticed on another thread that the elementary schools are full and registration should occur early. My daughter is 16 months old, so I'm assuming we have some time. How early should I begin the process of reaching out to the schools to inquire about registration?

Thanks so much!

Default Schools

If you're referring to College Heights Early Learning Center which is City of Decatur schools 0-3 and pre-K school, there is absolutely a year+ waiting list for the 0-3 program last I heard. You will want to get moved in and get on their waiting list as soon as possible after getting your city of Decatur address. The contact info is here for College Heights: College Heights Early Childhood Learning Center
You have plenty of time to worry about Pre-K and after (no waiting list for anything k-12 of course). Good luck!

Thanks Lauren. I actually was referring to elementary school (Oakhurst or Winnona Park depending on where we land). Maybe I misread the post that I was referring to. My daughter is currently enrolled in daycare so as long as there is no worry about registration with the elementary school in a few years, I guess we are good. Thanks again.

If you are living in the school district, whether renting or own, then your child can go to the school your home is districted to. Bar none. If you're currently in a home districted to Oakhurst then your child will go there, unless you choose to go private.

It's not like NYC where you need to apply for schools. Here kids go to the schools they're districted to based on their residence. It's probably the main reason Atlanta has gentrified in the manner it has, resulting in higher property taxes in the nicer areas, etc.
