I second Kirkwood, Ormewood, and East Atlanta Village too.

I am also a fan of West End and Westview and am seriously considering that area. It is much more transitional but has a really strong, really liberal community committed to improving their neighborhoods. You can also get a great house for well under 150K!

This is a really old thread, but if anyone is still around I'd like to know if you'd still recommend Westview. My wife and I (lesbian couple) are in our 20s-30s looking to start a family in the next year or two. We live in Denver and love it; however, I hear good things about Atlanta and we can get much more house for our budget there. We're looking for a house under 200K in a neighborhood that is active and accepting. Is Westview still a good choice? Any new suggestions?

Thanks!

Be aware that it is still very much an early up-and-coming neighborhood. So you will need to be conscious of crime and other issues. It has a long road to get there but I think it has a bright future.

The Eastside Kirkwood, Ormewood, and East Atlanta Village neighbor hoods are further along that path. You should be able to find a home there for less than $200K still.

We actually left City of Decatur (after having lived there for many years) for Avondale with the hopes that it would be a good fit. Unfortunately we've had some scary incidents both in Avondale and City of Decatur that have made us uncomfortable enough to want to stay away from these areas. Especially with plans to start a family, I want to make sure that the neighborhood we choose is safe for us. We had heard Avondale was a good choice, but after being here for a few years we've learned that most of our nearby neighbors are quite socially conservative and it's been made very clear to us that we're not welcome here. Some friends of ours (also a lesbian couple) are having similar issues in City of Decatur. From what I've heard Decatur is getting more socially conservative and less accepting of diversity. I'm sure it depends on your location, and we know that no neighborhood is going to be perfect. But for now we're weighing our options and looking into different areas.

Thanks again for the advice. I had not considered Kirkwood, but I'll have to do some more research on the area and see if it's a good fit.
I see that this is an old thread, but I'll respond anyway. City of Decatur is heavily marketed (for lack of a better word) as a certain kind of place, but it isn't necessarily all that it is made out to be. There are indeed good schools schools there, and lots of good people. But things change over time. Decatur is trendy, and we all know what happens to trendy places eventually - think about the Portlandia skit "this bar is so over".

Start a family? Won't that confuse the kids?

So is Dick-Hater no longer the lesbian capital of the south? It held that reputation for so long!

Well, in terms of diversity, the Perimeter Center area in Sandy Springs and Dunwoody is at least as racially diverse as Decatur these days, if not moreso. It is still quite affluent, but it is definitely not the southern suburban WASP stereotype that is commonly portrayed, which must be a relic of the 1980's or something. In fact if I were an affluent minority, Dunwoody/Sandy Springs would be the first place I'd look. I can't comment on the homosexual population though. Overall, these days City of Decatur is affluent and "lilly white".

In other words, the "Dunwoody housewife" of the 1980's is now the "Johns Creek housewife", or perhaps the "Forsyth County housewife". LOL!
