Seeing a pediatrician is probably a good first step. But I would see an Emory pediatrician. They can evaluate your son and then recommend an Emory specialist.

From my experience with doctors in private practice, referrals may be based on competency but they also may be based on other factors such as friendship.

And I know referrals even at Emory can be based on a lot of factors. Of course competency should be in the equation, but other factors may be present, too.

I am hoping that your pediatrician is someone that you can trust to give you good advice. Hopefully, they will care enough about your child to refer you to the same specialist that they would also use for their own children. I also think that finding the best regional pediatric specialists is also important. We ended up at Yale University with our son. And then there were no concrete answers (partially because he was adopted and we don't know his real history).

The biggest glitch, from my point of view, is getting some sort of insurance compensation. Even though you may be willing and able to spend thousands of dollars, there are many kids/families who cannot. You just have to do the best that you can.
