How is it we are moving backwards? You want to bring back passenger cruise liners too? Ships are good for vacation cruising. I believe there are cruise ships that dock in Charleston and Savannah.

And as for the FLIGHT option, all of the comments I've seen above seem to be from a leisure perspective. There is a HUGE market for business travel between Atlanta and Savannah and that's what Delta is cashing in on with its 12 daily round trips. That, a ferrying long-haul flyers into Savannah from the ATL hub. It's actually cheaper to buy a ticket from Savannah to LA connecting through ATL than just from Savannah to ATL, but they won't let you do that.

There is tremendous hope here in Savannah that once Southwest gets it's grounding in Atlanta, they'll enter the Savannah-Hilton Head market. It would be a no-brainer on their part and change the dynamic of ATL-SAV air traffic. Savannah's wonderful airport is underutilized and could easily handle far more traffic!

Now what IS sad is the old Atlanta Terminal Station that ended that 6-hour Savannah-Atlanta trip was torn down in 1971 to make way for the Richard B Russell building.

It's moving backwards because rail travel will be very important in the future when gasoline is prohibitively expensive.

I said nothing about cruises. I was responding to the RELEVANT portion. But yes, cruises leaving from GA would be a good thing for our economy.

I'd love to see a nice train between Atlanta and Savannah. The Nancy Hanks was quite popular up into the 1960s. It's a short run and with a good train it can easily compete with the airlines and the automobile. How pleasant it would be to step aboard and settle into a comfortable seat, read the paper and perhaps have a cocktail.

Train tickets the week of St. Patricks Day would be a hot commodity.

If it gets to that point, we'll probably be able to address it then. But we've been predicting the demise of personal transportation for a long time now. It'll probably go electric and hybrid. And even if so, by then CSX and Norfolk Southern will probably pick up on the newly lucrative passenger market and things will work out anyway.

Then why did the Nancy Hanks shut down?

Probably be cheaper to improve Atlanta's St Patricks Day parade if that is the issue. No need to go!
