Yep, I think it's a common courtesy in many places where women are respected.

Not being taught to younger people. Rode the train home during yesterday evening commute and a group of older high schoolers was with some parents. As older women started to board the boys wouldn't get up, they complained their toe hurt or some BS. Then the mom turned and said that's what REAL gentleman do, give their seat to a lady. I wanted to yank them damn kids up! Disrespectful kids, my mom would have slapped me on the back of the head for that.

It's a cultural thing. My nieces and nephews are all very polite, but they are growing up in an area where such values still exist and are still being taught.
