For your price range, you will have to stay in the suburbs. You may even have to up your budget (A little) for the burbs.

For your price range, low crime areas may be hard to find.

I recommend you look at Hapeville. Hapeville is near the airport and not far from the city of Atlanta. You may also want to checkout East Point too. These areas (Hapeville and East Point) are pretty close to the city and you may find an apartment within your budget.

The further out you go (Duluth, Alpharetta, Marietta, Douglasville, Stockbridge, Kennesaw) the cheaper the apartments will be, but traffic will be a "beast"..... Much worse than anything you probably have experienced in Michigan. So my best advice would be to find something in a fairly decent neighborhood/area close to the city just so that you don't have to deal with the hellacious traffic of ATL.

Most rents in $500-600 range are in rough areas of town. Have you considered getting a roommate? Perhaps an efficiency would work. You are limiting yourself by bring a pet, just letting you know. You will be limited to mostly suburban areas.
