If the county would just be a county and stop trying to be a city and a county, then I would wager the secessionists would stop secessing.

Again, Georgia counties acting as municipalities is the problem. Why work with a probelm?

I think the bottom line for North Fulton folks wanting to separate is their desire to have their own school system. It is a different reason from DeKalb residents wanting to separate schools for one reason.... DeKalb IS one contiguous county. Fulton on the other hand, as far as the county run schooll system goes, has the independent City of Atlanta Schools slicing their geographic map in half... and not just cut in half, the state's largest city lies between the two sections.

For this oddity of geography, it should have a reason to be a separate school district. Its kind of like having Cobb and Gwinnett as one school district... or Douglas and Henry.... they are two distinct areas of the metro area and are only joined by the fact that they are part of the oddest shaped county in the state. And that oddness is because of the mergers of Milton and Campbell back in the depression years.

I know it is whiter and wealthier and race can and will be a factor. But for the sheer fact that they are totally separate from each other by distance, I can see the need for a split in these schools. If there were allowed to be a separate North Fulton school system and a South Fulton School System, I doubt the desire to seek a restoration of Milton would be as strong as it is.

The folks in Dunwoody don't have this in common, DeKalb is one contiguous county. Now if Decatur was as big as Atlanta land wise in the center with its own separate school system stretching from one side of the county to the other, then it would be more of a fair comparison.

Excellent post.
